  • would rather have it than a building which has been sitting burned out, vacant and hideous for years now.
  • Man, I hate Petco. Seriously, we have some very friendly locally owned pet stores that we should support.
  • agree that a chain coming isn't the best, but i think most of the pet stores in park slope are extremely overpriced with rotten service.

petco is going to give them a run for their money, that's for darn sure.
  • Ugh....I will not be supporting a Petco.... and for the love of god people, NEVER leave your dog here for any kind of grooming or daycare.
  • We do need another place for non dog/cat stuff. If they have fish and reptile supplies, which only Petland carries around here, I'll be happy to see them. When Petland is out of certain live food, I have to trek into the city and the weather out kills what I'm getting on the trip home during certain times of the year. That said, I pretty much hate the Petco's I go to in Manhattan, but all the pet stores I've gone to there for reptile stuff have poor service, imo.
  • ^ have you tried Sean Casey for live food? I don't know what your little country Billy-Bob (I forgot his real name, but remember he's a hyphenate...LOL) eats, but he keeps roaches, crickets, etc. at his pet store in Ft. Hamilton.
  • Am I the only one who likes Petco? I love my local Acme and will continue to support them but Petco lets animal rescues adopt out pets at their store. They provide low cost care to animals and they sponsor and donate to many animal causes - everything I want in a neighborhood pet store.
  • Stanley-Bob is his name and he loves his crickets!

I think I tried Sean Casey a long time ago, but it is really too far of a trek for me, esp. as a weekly outing in the winter.

I've grown found of the staff at Petland (I think I may get better service now that they recognize me?), but I am excited to have another option nearby.

If the new Petco doesn't have an aquarium/reptile section I have no strong feelings on it either way.
  • Stanley-Bob! How could I forget?

Sorry, but after reading this board for the past 5 years, that file is completely filled...

I'll file it under "cool posts by young n modern"... that file is actually totally empty.

I'm with you Stacey. I adopted Ollie through KittyKind at Petco in Union Square. I do most of my shopping at my local Smith Street pet store, but fully support Petco for their rescue policies.
  • i give it 6-months, tops
  • I dunno, if the prices are good they might do well. I, too, like to support my local small stores, but find myself getting juiced on certain items. I wanted a big tupperware-type thing to store dog food in... cheapest I found was $50 at one of the stores up on 5th. $50, for a plastic container?! Even the sales girl told me to just go to Target.... I've been in the market for a new dog bed for my smallish dog and don't really see anything worthwhile for under $60. And why are poop bags so expensive? >.<

I'll keep shopping local for quality food and treats, but I'll probably stop in the petco when looking for supplies.
  • I'm happy about Petco. I find most of the local places incredibly overpriced and not very friendly. Petco does adoptions, low-cost spay and neuter and has everything I would ever need for both the feline and the canine in my life.
  • I don't get the whole "overpriced" part of this thread. Local will always be more expensive than a chain store, they just don't have the bargaining leverage. Now, if they don't back up the premium with good personalized service, I get not wanting to pay the extra dough. I've abandoned my local shops in favor of online because none of them seemed know their product or want my (polite, informed & patient) repeat business.
  • petco will do great here. plus it's going to be in a brand new, landmark approved 10,000 sf building which is only being constructed now that petco has signed on the dotted line.

the overpriced, grimy pet stores with rude salespeople in park slope better step it up or they're toast.
  • I have yet to be in a grimy/rude pet store by me. I go to the one on 5th ave and the one on 6th ave around Sterling. Both have store kitty's (totally spoiled and loved), super friendly, always helpful, yeah they might not be a big-box discount store, But I love seeing the kids (part of the owners family and some customers) in there, the helpful service and when I was trying to place an abandoned cat they posted my fliers and were very helpful.
  • Mark my words. Petco will find a way to make that building look like crap. Sad indeed.
  • how could it look more like crap than it has for the past few years?

don't think you have much in the way of experience with landmarks if you think they'll let much total crap get built in the middle of a very prominent historic district.
  • Is that block of Seventh Avenue really part of the historic district? I very much doubt it. If it is not, then the Landmarks people probably have no jurisdiction whatsoever.
  • the block is landmarked and the owner of the lot has already had his plans approved by landmarks and the rendering looks very nice.

petco will need to keep it classy because of the design.
  • According to the map, it is in the landmarked zone, but just barely. At Union and south of there it's pretty much 8th Ave to PPW only.

    Maps can be downloaded here:

  • sorry, it's only going to be 5,000 sf....not 10,000.
  • We need more places to buy hamster bedding and food.

    That is all.

    Short and to the point

You don't have much experience with Petco. I lived close to a Petco for years and based on my experience they will try to get around the law every way possible.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. Maybe I will write a letter to Petco management urging them to respect the landmark rules.

Actually Jamzer I have been to the one at Union Square and it looks like they preserved the look on the outside as well as inside.

@Voodoo - I got my kitty Rocky at Petco and he looks a lot like Ollie? When did you adopt him?

Stacey: I got Ollie in October of 2007 I think. A crazy man dropped a box of very sick 4 week old kitties at Petco's door when they were closed. He almost died because he wouldn't eat. Hard to believe looking at the fat boy now. How old is Rocky?
