I've lived on this block for 8 years now (and other areas in the neighborhood before that). I routinely walk around after dark and walk to and from the subways late at night. I don't pull out my phone at night at all though. The noise level really depends on what your windows face and whether they are on a loud courtyard/alley or not - it really depends on the location. For example, my kitchen windows face onto a courtyard that is shared by another building and, from what I can gather, a bevy of pre-teen girls live in that building.. they routinely sing along to Rihanna or whatever, but it doesn't bother me. On the other side of my place, it's almost always quiet, but we can sometimes hear music from St. Johns. It also depends on your floor.

As far as Prospect Heights goes, this is one of the blocks that will most likely change the least because it is so long and dense, and is pretty much just big multi-unit buildings. I've seen some changes in my section, but mostly it's just fewer people hanging on stoops (which didn't bother me before anyway). In my opinion it's actually sometimes safer than more remote/brownstoney blocks because there are usually people around, it's well lit, and there are businesses on both the Underhill and Wash sides that are open late at night. It's obviously less attractive, but that has more to do with the (also big, multi-unit) landlords that run the block - many of whom, by most accounts, do the absolute bare minimum necessary to collect their checks.

I have lived on EP for the last 9 years, and my building has experienced consistently less noise each year from the buildings on Lincoln. ....Those of us who live on EP, of course, never make noise...

Here's some context: On a 1 - 10 scale of wimpyness, I give myself a 7. Wherein, 1 = most wimpy, 10 = least wimpy.

As a result this context, from 2003 - 2007 when I walked my dog at 11 PM, I rarely (if ever) walked around the block that is EP, Underhill, Lincoln, EP.

Now (post 2007), I walk my dog around that block pretty regularly, probably once a week.

I haven't seen someone I suspect to be a blatant lobby-based drug dealer since at least 2009.

The litter is for the most part, gone.

With the exception of July 4 and Memorial Day weekend, the speakers are no longer placed in the windows, blasting music out to the street.

I am (hopefully) moving into a co-op on the Washington side of Lincoln Place and while I'm aware that the block has its share of section 8 housing and seems to support some dealing, I never got any bad vibes while walking, night or day. I was asked if I wanted to buy weed and someone liked my haircut! It seems like Cheryls, Sepia and now this Bar Corvo spin off on Washington/Lincoln will bookend yuppification for better or worse.
