^ ha. good points. Just wanted to get back to Mack's and away from SM!
-
I actually ate there on Friday night. Burgers were good. Service was very nice. Still some kinks to work out. Fries were undercooked. They were nice to the kids, which is great. Full kids menu was provided, so expect some little ones.

I was disappointed when Snooky's closed a few years ago and was excited to hear that Mack's was going to be opening.
I have been in there a couple of times and have been dissatisfied
First off they hired a bartender that got canned from another neighborhood bar for being a crappy barkeep. He is inattentive to the people sitting at the bar. My empty beer glass sat on the bar for 10 minutes and I still wasnt even asked if wanted another. It would be one thing if it was a high volume dance club but this is a bar that can seat about 18 customers and there were maybe 12 people at the time. Additionally, It still has too much of an "Elementi" feel, stark, bright and cold and the food is not all that good. their spinich and artichoke sucked, may have well been dipping into a jar of mayonaise.
The funny thing is that I think alot of this could be overlooked if Mack's had one simple thing...HAPPY HOUR. -
Went to Macks for the 3rd time, and have decided: I LIKE IT!!

I need to do at least one visit to respond.
It is on the list! -
tried macks again
have to say same weird vibe
i want this place to be good so badly
but the weird creepy older crowd at the bar; the intensely bright lighting and the incredibly stale atmosphere is a deal killer
i give it until labor day unfortunately -
Please tell me why you say "weird creepy older crowd"? What is weird and creepy about them? I have yet to be there, but, I am curious
-
has anyone actually mentioned the bright lighting to them?
sounds like that one's an easy fix and if people want it to stay open, it might be a lot more productive to let the people who run the place know about it instead of talking about it here. -
Re... lights
My memory of Snookys was the bar area in front had the dim lights and the dining room behind was quite bright. the configuration of the place changed with Elementi (not worth the discussion) but that basic configuration is the same.
I still haven't been in there so I might be wrong. Either way I agree with Belzjm that talking to the owner about the situation is the way to go. That chat would especially make sense if anyone tries the place and actually likes it and would consider a return visit but the brightness was going to be the deciding factor as to whether the place makes your personal A list. -
its more than the lighting unfortunately; the lighting just ads to how big and empty feeling the place is – it just doesn’t have any character
it has one big tv on a wall which has no chairs facing it and three of the smallest tvs ive ever seen above the bar, so that doesn’t work
it feels like a hall where you would have a reception – just big and stale
and 6 or 7 older men (50+) at the bar who look like professional drinkers doesn’t help the ambiance -
personally i think old timers at a bar is quite ambient.
aren't there enough hipster type young people bars in the neighborhood already? there's like 20 of those places. what's so wrong with having a place where older folks feel at home? sounds like this place wasn't trying to be the next high dive or commonwealth and that's just fine. -
I still don't get why the fact that there are 6 or 7 older men (50 plus, oooh, oooolllldldl!!!) drinking at the bar bothers you so much? By professional drinkers, I take it to mean, people who drink a lot or go to bars a lot? Are they fall down sloppy drunks? I live right near a very popular bar and see some of the same people there all the time, they are young, in their 20s probably, is it better to see 20 somethings who are professional drinkers?
I just can't figure out your issue here, is it that there are people who seem like they drink a lot? Is it because they are sloppy drunks? Or is it because they are in their 50s? -
Just go and see for yourself
every person i have gone there with has had the same reaction
its not older folks feeling at home and having fun, it has the feeling of desperation drinking (as opposed to fun drinking) to me and I find it creepy -
I went. I understand the reactions to the decor, things were just a bit too bright, but that's easily remedied. The service was friendly and competent. I cannot recommend the fried calamari appetizer, but the pizza and salad that we had for our main courses were both very good. I'm sure they'll sort things out.

I have always referred to that website as: TBDKSAB "The blog doesn't know sh!t about Brooklyn"
I don't know what post was my favorite, "The Park Slope 100" or when she endorsed Caroline Kennedy for senate. Anytime I need a reminder of how nonsensically self-aggrandizing and full of themselves people can be...TBDKSAB never fails to remind me. -
My girlfriend and I have been pretty excited for this place to open. 7th ave definitely needed a cool younger bar type place where you could watch a game, grab a beer and a burger. Like a smaller cooler version of 200 5th. We had been watching this thread so seeing the negative reviews was very disappointing. We had been planning on going last Saturday night but this thread swayed us (well... and the torrential rain and wind that night as well)
We ended up going last night and I'm happy to say there have been a few changes since the last review. The lights were dim so obviously they've taken care of that. They did have music playing, however, it was Frank Sinatra's greatest hits for pretty much our entire stay. I like a bit of Frank every now and again (read: maybe once a year), but mix it up a bit.
I had the Angus burger, medium rare, with swiss, fried onions and mushrooms. A pretty tasty burger and really good plate of fries. My girlfriend got the Penne Vodka and was underwhelmed. Our waitress was slow at getting drinks. Took about 10 minutes for my girlfriend to get a diet coke and another 10 for me to get a beer.
Overall a pretty meh experience. Some 40 year old "Joey Long Island" type who was loud and obnoxious underscored our our already edgy feelings about this place by hastily slamming down a martini glass on the bar, breaking it. As anyone would do in this situation, he laughed heartily as if nothing happened.
Like its predecessor Snooky's (never went to Elementi) where I remarked back in 2003 "This place is like eating in suburban Pennsylvania") and that's what Mack's 140's is like and I'm from Pennsylvania.
Hopefully 7th ave will get a real bar with slightly upscale bar food soon. -
Went to Macks on Thursday. I actually live 2 corners away from the original but never went there - just doesn't really call to me - so I can't compare.
The lights were ANYTHING but dim, giving the space a very sort of strange furniture store-come-neuvo-diner vibe. We sat up front by the window; maybe it's better in the back.
I had a Guiness and the turkey burger with sweet potato fries. The turkey burger was cooked fine but really had no flavor of it's own. It was greatly helped by the jalepenos and cheddar that I added. I actually think Dizzy's Turkey Burger, while nothing great, has better flavor. I DO love me some sweet potato fries and these were fine but didn't strike me as being home made or anything special. All in all, the meal was average at best but nothing to complain about. However, the prices - given the food- are overpriced. It's not insulting by any stretch but seems incongruous with the level of food.
Service was fine if not uneven but it was the waiter's first day so he gets a total pass.
If they gave this place more of a tavern feel and less of an Elementi feel; I think it would do just fine. As it is...I'm not sure how great the shelf life is because it doesn't call to me to sit down and have a beer. It says.."take out in a pinch" at best.
Still, I wish them the best of luck because I do love the local businesses! -
Anyone been back yet?
-
yikes, doesnt even last til labor day (possibly):

Wow Burns.. that interesting.
I have not been there in this incarnation and now it seems there will be another.
I am beginning to think that this location might become a part of that "curse" of locations that just don't incarnate.
If it comes to pass it will be known as the Snooky's Curse! -
again with the Snooki Curse!

Flexi... a curse is a curse... unless it gets removed or an exorcism is performed or whatever!

I offered once to do an exorcism on Oppossum Queen's apartment. Had her landlord coughed up the cash, I would have been there
-
and Flexi... I am sure you would have done a great job!
Mod note: pizza talk and about the new place moving in is located here
