  • looks like a women's clothing store is going in where Matter used to be, next to the new banh mi place on 5th.
and they're doing a lot of construction on the old 3R living space - looks like they might be putting in some sort of ventilation system for a kitchen, but i couldn't tell.
  • read this on racked.com last week.

perhaps it's the store taking the place of matter...

    ***
PARK SLOPE—Madison Rose, the hip Carroll Gardens maternity shop, is opening a second location in Park Slope. The lease is already signed, and they're aiming to be open by June 15th. We have the craziest feeling they'll do well in that neighborhood. [RackedWire]
  • the wood is off the chicken and bread place opening on 5th St and 7th ave....
  • oh, matter has actually become a place called two lovers (womens clothing)

i guess madison rose is going somewhere else...
  • Compare Foods on 5th btw 7/8 streets now has a glass storefront. It's the second makeover in as many years but this time around the results are more pleasing. In addition to the glass wall they moved the deli counter from back to front, pushed the refrigerated section back and enlarged the meats section. The confusing second entrance/exit door (never sure which was which) has been eliminated. The store feels much more open and inviting.
  • I still only buy certain things in there - the store has a terrible odor which they can't seem to get rid of

A little stuffy maybe but never a strange odor. Do you find it's still there after the latest make-over?
  • Yeah I do find it since the makeover...I think it's a smell they're stuck with...can't explain it...it's not the worst thing in the world but it 's a turn off to me.

What was there before and or what is around the place? A sewer problem perhaps?
  • the smell comes from the basement- I frequently walk by when they're accepting deliveries and the street-level door is open.
I do love that they're open till 10, but I dont usually by anything that isn't prepackaged.
  • AOC Bistro closed today... by the health department.

They have fliers up under the health stickers that it is a "technicality", but that is never good.
  • Smart & Healthy (Compare) on 5th Ave and 7th St has really been changing their look. Meant to post a while back, but they have a new outdoor produce section. Hopefully they are moving towards more good fresh stuff.

Just saw a new newstand going in outside of the CVS on 9th St.

    From Brownstoner:
"The LuLu's empire (which already has two shops on 5th Avenue) is expanding. In September, LuLu's then&now, a children's resale store offering clothes, toys, books, and baby gear, will open on the corner of 5th and Prospect in the old Eshe Boutique spot. They are also accepting clothes now for the fall and winter, for cash or store credit"

Read somewhere else, maybe brownstoner, that a new pizza joint is going on 5th Ave and Berkeley.
  • Frankly, Smart and Healthy needs to do something about the rank odor in that place. I was going to go in but the smell was wafting out on the street.
    Ech!
  • i'm wondering what's happening in the old T Thai space on 7th avenue. definitely seeing them work on the space a lot lately...
  • Well, looks likes the Artisan Bread, Chicken place is opened. Menus and sign says it's the Park Slope Eatery.

  • Those are just the categories. It would take me a week to list all the items they serve.
  • Passed by it last night. They also have a make your own salad counter...nice.
  • It seems the make your own salad thing is something people have been clamoring for, so that's nice, but it looks like a basic diner, which is kind of a bummer.
  • Yay! I've been wanting make your own salad forever!
  • new2hood wrote: It seems the make your own salad thing is something people have been clamoring for, so that's nice, but it looks like a basic diner, which is kind of a bummer.
Exactly. We don't need another diner. I do like the salad part though.
  • what did we need more of?
  • we need a place where you can by pre-prepared stuff by the pound.

Like those salad, fried rice places in Manhattan

    Mana's in Harlem
  • a place like that just opened on union between 6th and 7th, whynot...

    www.lucasfinefoods.com

    their stuff is delicious.

also, union market sells lots of prepared food by the pound. lucas is cheaper, though.
  • or this place in south slope on 5th avenue between 11th and 12th streets...

    also new.

    http://greenkitchenbrooklyn.com/
  • ^^ from their websites, those places all look healthy and expensive. (like they want to be the Whole Foods at Union Square).

Nope. I want some place where there is a variety of chinese, questionable sushi as well as indian food and salad. ....and fried chicken.

Then I can drink it all with a diet coke and tell myself I ate healthy, even though I didn't.

Bill for lunch should be $10.84

Flatbush Avenue would be an appropriate venue.
    Fifth Avenue would also work.

It should not have "fine foods" or "green" in its name.

....It might be run by a nice Korean family. http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/mannas-soul-food-restaurant/menus/main.html
  • ok...

but the salad, indian, dessert and everything else bar at whole foods is $7.99 per lb so you could easily get in and out of there for less than $10.84 with your diet coke. and their food is actually good.

it's a misnomer that whole foods is expensive. if you know how to shop, it's actually quite a bit cheaper than most of nyc's grocery stores.
  • I worked at Union Sq from 2006 - 2009. ...Whole "Paycheck" Foods was crazy expensive.

...and because everything was organic, it would spoil within 1 day.

...and Whole Foods won't sell me (or you) a Diet Coke b/c they think it is bad for us.

    Manna's is $4.49 a lb. The places in Mid-town are about $6 a lb.

....there is enough demand on Flatbush and Fifth Avenue to sell food that lasts a while, and can be stored on a steam table for an entire day without losing its yummy, greasy goodness.
  • By the pound buffets are a rip off in almost all cases. Whynot's place does sound better though. Whole Foods is super expensive, no doubt.
  • (Mama, the Whole Foods at Union Sq has the added disadvantage of being over run by NYU Yoga Women who take forever to choose what they want, while being completely unaware that they are wacking bystanders with their $60 yoga mats whenever they turn to look at each other. )

    Back on topic:

It's all about being able to have five ethnicities of food instaneously on one plate, without ever having to talk to anyone.

...but, yes, if you want to have just one item (say, chinese) you'd get a better "dollar per calorie" ratio at your local chinese place.

You have to love Formica tables as well.

    My place would rock.

    My target market would include:
People who like salads, but are too lazy to chop their own and/or are too impatient/distrustful of food service people to believe that they will receive the the right amount of cucumbers.

    Taxi drivers.

    Dollar Van drivers.

    Whynot

Drunk people (i.e. people on their way to or from the new arena)

People who like the squeak made by styrofoam.

People who are willing to eat "sushi" that has been out all day.

People who like a little Fried chicken with their spinach salad.

People who got off the double decker tourist bus at Prospect Park, but then missed the last double decker bus back to Manhattan ...and are out to see the "real New York".

People who think Koreans are likely to make a pretty good version of indian chicken tikka.

People who don't want a burger or pizza for lunch, but are too indecisive to eliminate anything else.

People who are too lazy to order food in person or over the phone, but aren't too lazy to scoop something onto their plate.

....the list of customers is endless.

You know that fancy grocery place that recently took over the "I sold on Ebay" store on Flatbush? I predict it will fail. I will then capture the space and begin a great by the lb food dynasty, like Manna did in Harlem.

(She has 3 locations now, is a millionaire, and reportedly is one of the best paying employers on 125th St.).
