CON ED: Turn off everything (right...)
http://gothamist.com/2010/06/28/con_ed_asking_many_in_brooklyn_to_t.php
Interesting request from Con Ed to customers in 6 neighborhoods in Brooklyn, including Park Slope. Never heard of this before... but have not been around for THAT long.
Anyone get the call?

I saw that as a crawl about an hour ago across the tv, but PS was not included at that time

^whew. Am just outside of the zone. I did turn all of the lights off and unplugged tv and things for a while. AC is on "energy saver" mode and I upped set temperature by 2 degrees. That's all they're getting from me right now.
-
that was strange. maybe just my building, but everything in my apt went really low for about 10 seconds. The lights all dimmed. Strange. I guess I can live hot for a while.

Same thing happened to me about 25 minutes ago. -
Yea, we had a brownout about 20 min ago in South Slope. Got everthing off except for the living room a/c (I know, I know, the biggest power hog in the whole apt).

I lived in Astoria when they had that big blackout back in 2006-ish, and sorry to say, this is exactly how it started...
I think part of the problem is that almost nobody complies with these "warnings"
It's too hot to stay home with no a/c - I'm going to catch a movie. -
Well, even though my a/c may contribute to Blackout 2010, I played no part in the blackout of 2006. I was at Jones Beach and had to endure a 9 hr, multi-bus trek back to Brooklyn. It was actually a lot of fun. Jamaica and East New York were like giant outdoor parties, whereas Park Slope was quiet as a morgue.

^ I'm not talking about the big city-wide blackout. There was another one in Queens a few years ago...it lasted like 10 days and was caused by some kind of cables blowing out in the street.
Most people don't check the con ed website, and the 6 o'clock news made no mention of it, so my guess would be that the majority of peeps don't know and are blissfully enjoying their a/c and tv. -
Got THREE calls today asking me to turn stuff off; address is near Fulton/Washington.
(Not even in town today, so I'm helping!)

Who called you?
-
They called so many times on my home phone i was annoyed. at first the recording didnt work and I just got dead space. i dialed the 800 number back to see who it was and it was con ed. i knew my bill was paid in full and never thought they were giving me a call in regards to conserving electricitythen the recording worked. but the kicker for me was the prompt on my cell phone for 3 messages. when i checked them they too were from con ed. how the hell did they get my cell phone number i wonder. i got about 8 calls up till ten o clock last evening.

Any calls today?

I was in Astoria for the 2006 blackout.
Ten miserable days. Everything rotting in the refrigerator.
CONED, as usual, lying: they maintained that the affected customers were just a few. Only after the magnitude of the problem was too much to be kept hidden they kind of accepted how bad was the situation.
They also told everybody they were working like crazy to get everything running again... sure: I watched most of their people laughing, eating and drinking their hours in the street. Day after day after day.
One of my neighbors had mental problems. During the blackout, she stopped answering her door and phone. Everybody assumed she had left the building. She passed away during the blackout; it was discovered a few days after it started.
I just hope no blackout happens. If it does, do please, check on your neighbors. And be insistent. You never know what can happen under such circumstances. -
looks like the call to conserve is ongoing:

Con Ed just did an automated call to us in WT

Got a Con Ed call earlier this morning in North Slope - this is mos def the day to unplug chargers and turn everything possible OFF before you leave for the day. A brown out would suck. It also could damage your electronics left in sleep mode, so the unplug has a double self-preservation mode.
No vacuuming, dishwashing, ironing, blender drinks or laundry 'til the heatwave breaks!
Srsly, power fluctuations are just the sort of thing that fry your gear so UNPLUG and conserve. And yell at any businesses you pass blasting a/c with their doors open.
(note: posting from a battery-powered mobile device.) -
A brown-out would be quite unpleasant.
Switching off an outlet strip counts as unplugging, right? -
mg: yup.
Last time I was at a friend's house in the UK, I was really surprised by the ubiquity of hard switches (e.g. power OFF) on devices (including laptop & cell chargers).
It's terrifying how much those little bricks suck up, even when not being used. -
The electrical system in NY is about 90 years old in some places
Have you guys ever seen old torn up wire in an old house? That's what's powering the street, and Con Ed is continually changing that all out for new stuff
They just can't move fast enough
I have seen both sides and feel no sympathy for them, but the reality of the situation is it will be a LOOONG time before Con Ed's distribution system is 100% -
I got a called this morning from con ed, I saw their crews working in the north slope.

Watched the news this AM and air conditioning is considered a necessary usage. Just keep it set to 77-78 degrees. This is more important for the elderly and if you have pets that stay indoors. Also, if you know your elderly neighbors, try to check in on them... heat related deaths are much too common.
-
Another reason to conserve electricity right now for those in the affected areas: you can get a higher bill at times like this. When they reduce the voltage coming in to your home, the amps go up because your stuff is working harder to get enough energy. The result is that you are paying more for whatever electricity you are still using.

I heard on NY1 earlier today that Con-Ed reduced power to parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Also that the MTA turned off various Brooklyn subway elevators. Are outer boroughs just being picked on, or are there legitimate reasons for this?
-
I don't think the outer boroughs are being picked on any more than usual...I got an email yesterday saying that the midtown office tower I usually work in (Which is home to some very powerful, well-connected firms) was told by NYC or Con-Ed (It isn't clear which) to shut down 1/2 the elevators and turn up the thermostat a few degrees, which sucks since the firm requires everyone to wear suits...
-
I am working in an office with only about 25% of our lights on. I figured it would probably be more energy efficient if I stay at work as opposted to going home and cranking the AC.
It has been pretty warm so I give credit to upper management (or NYC/CoEd Folks who required this) for keeping the AC not too high but also relaxing our dress code and doing what we can to balance the line between running a business and being conservative. -

Not really- you should unplug the strip as well. I remember last year they mentioned unplugging everything that wasn't being used because even if the power's off there's still electricity going out to the device.
