They're back to trash Prospect Park Again? MIH Ventures

In case anyone missed it...the "Heatwave" is back on(July 18th), but iam sure this year will be different since they actually got a permit. How they got one is beyond me given their lack of respect for the park last year.

  • Isn't it already trashed from July 4th weekend?
  • Police should be on hand to issue littering citations to anyone and everyone whom they observe tossing/leaving trash. The individuals are just as responsible as the event coordinator, and they shouldn't be let off the hook just because they're a mob. The city could probably balance the budget on fines from this day alone.
  • It's bizarre how over-policed some events are (political protests, for example) while others (like this one last year) get virtually ignored. I hope there will be a strong police presence this year, so that the police are actually in control of the mob, rather than being afraid to do anything.

It's a fine line. Everyone has a right to use the park, as long as they don't abuse it. Hopefully the NYPD can keep things under control without turning it into something like NYE at Times Square.
  • Well, at least the park knows to expect them and will likely dispatch the trash picker-uppers sooner. Hopefully MIH will be a little more careful after all the talk of what they did last year.

For those wondering why we all care, here are a few reminders of last years mess that covered a large portion of the Longmeadow.

Indeed. One would think, seeing as how this group already abused the park last year, that they wouldn't have been granted a permit to do exactly the same thing this year.
  • They should be made to put a giant security deposit down, returnable only after the park is cleaned up after their party. No cleanup = funds go to hiring people to do it
  • Well, whatever happens I wouldn't mind picking up one of those grills.
  • i smell a rat here. Where's Brooklyn's own Marty Markowitz when you really need him?
  • Has there been any evidence that they did any special cleaning up after last years event?
  • I wonder what would happen if the NYPD and Homeland Security got some tips about possible terror activity around this event. I think it might actually get some attention from the appropriate authorities if that happened.
  • ^^^ too underhanded.

    I'll just hope for rain.

To be clear, I'm NOT advocating that in any way. I was just wondering what would happen. 8)

I dunno, around here you might have better luck calling in with a complaint about excessive salt in the food or soda being given to children.

Or, more seriously, call in a report of a couple guys walking around brandishing handguns. That should get the cops in there real quick.

He's busy working with Chuck Schumer's wife, trying to get the PPW bike path removed.
  • don't get me started on the senators schmucks wife and dude trying to get the bike path removed!!!

isn't the senators schmucks wife former dot person or something.
  • anybody see the disaster that was the area outside the fences at the bandshell this morning?
  • I didn't see it, but it doesn't surprise me; celebrate brooklyn was so crowded last night they tweeted they were "at capacity" and closed the gates...never seen that before.
  • It wasn't much better inside btw, we cleaned the mess up for 2 hours plus.

Apparently, after the gates were closed, people continued to enter by jumping the gates. One cop manning the gate, while 10 people were jumping it at a time ensured there would be no significant enforcement. From what I heard, they also initially didn't have a system for tracking people who had gone in. Since there was no bathroom inside the venue proper, people who left to go to the bathroom before they finally started marking people's hands either weren't allowed back in, or had to jump the fence. Poor planning all around, it sounds like.

They'd better be MUCH better prepared for this MIH ridiculousness. Like Homeland Security prepared.
  • What's the latest on this mess-to-be? Seems that the usual suspects have been very, very quiet since this came out last week or so. Just get ready with your video and still cameras Sunday ...
  • it's in Nethermead this year.
  • So, how does the park look this morning?
  • I just got back from a run and it didn't look so bad...shocking, really.
  • So to sum up the article....

7 gunshots after the "peaceful" event...one person wounded.

"...source who saw the whole thing said that many participants showed up as if prepared for battle"

However, the park was left clean. Improvement from last year?
  • I was as angry as anyone about how this ended up last year.

If they did, in fact, leave the park clean then I have to give the organizers a lot of credit. That goes for the Parks department as well, because you'd literally have to ring the Nethermead with garbage bins (that do not exist there on a regular basis, just a mere 3 or 4 regular garbage cans) to support all the resulting waste.

But yeah, if the promoters really want to re-gain anyone's respect they need to put out messaging loud and clear that...

    - this is a day when people need to leave their guns and weapons at home, and demand the same of all people they come with

    - people really need to get back home to their neighborhoods after the event instead of lingering at park exits (perhaps even having some of the organizers' team at park exits alongside Park Police etc. directing folks to disperse...megaphones are far less a nuisance than gunshots)

There will always be bad apples at such huge, all-day gatherings where drinking and pot etc. are involved (and these events have definitely demonstrated the existence of those bad apples) so these organizers really need to put the ultimatum out there demanding mutual vigilance or no party at all.

Dunno if that or any other logic will ever work for the younger knuckle-heads, though.
  • However, I do have to give serious thought to this post from the Brooklyn Paper article comments:
The spin on this article is disturbing... The event was
VERY peaceful. There were thousands of young professionals in the park during the daytime hours. We live in Brooklyn NYC... this isn't the suburbs - Flatbush and Crown Heights, cmon.. The surrounding areas have residents who carry guns & easily entered the park. Do not associate the violence that took place with the event organizers. It is unfair.

When you have an event of that magnitude, you attract those people who start trouble. If a group of stragglers standing on Parkside and Flatbush see a group of beautiful black people entering the park - THEY WILL COME & tell their FRIENDS to come .

It is WRONG to knock MIH Ventures.
That is definitely a possibility worth considering, but one must also consider that it may be a combination of the two (some bad apples coming from outside as well as inside the event).

It's an open event. Not in any way private. All were invited, and invited to pass it along by word of mouth. Such is the intent and nature of PR for big, open, free events like this. One can't just say the whole group is one homogenous group of well-mannered professionals even though there may have been a huge contingent of those.

Once again it falls to the promoters to effectively deal with the liabilities they create and risks they open up with such a huge, open, broadly-promoted and hyped party as this.
  • Nasty discussion over there on the Brooklyn Paper site. Slobs are slobs, doesn't matter what colour their skin is. Stupid is .... as stupid does I guess.
  • This morning, the giant dumpster at the Nethermead was overflowing and there were easily a hundred more bags (I use bagged trash loosely) in various piles. Plenty of broken glass and food scraps around.

That said, the Londmeadow was particularly horrible today. An entire buffet was still set up--table with trays of mac & cheese, sausages, etc. Grills and food and other loose trash pretty widely scattered--the parks employees pretty much only get the bagged stuff by the cans.
  • can't they just banned these people for like years or life until they pay for some sort of clean up bill or something.
