Moving. Need boxes. Free boxes, some cheap boxes. Thoughts?
Anyone? I hear liquor stores are a good place to get free boxes. I also need some larger boxes, which I will probably have to buy. Thoughts on the best place to get them?
Anyone have amazing packing tips I should know about, like a packing tape dispenser that doesn't constantly lose the end of your tape forcing you waste time to pick at the end of the tape?

I got ALL of my boxes on Sunday nights when they were put out for recycling - about 50 Fresh Direct boxes, clean and in great shape. Hit the streets every Sunday night, especially near bigger buildings. Liquor stores are good too, especially if you know somebody there - start getting friendly if you aren't already!
I don't know why this took me so long to learn (or for somebody to tell me), but if you fold down one corner of the tape onto itself, you know where the end is and don't have to pick. I have ripped part of my lip off many times before learning this. -
Best time saver (not money saver): have the movers pack for you and bring their own materials.

While dedicated moving boxes do cost money, they are a thicker cardboard and a consistent size (for each modular). They have no staples that can scratch varnish or linoleum, no open slots at the bottom that little things can fall out of, and they are clean. They stack evenly, square over the top of each other, which makes for nice blocks that do not shift in transit, and they are simpler to handle for those not familiar with the idiosyncracies of the contents of the boxes. /2¢

why dont you check the brooklyn group of freecycle.org. just a few days ago someone was offering alot of moving boxes.

For small boxes, I've gotten them just by asking at supermarkets. I got a bunch at the one on Vanderbilt... they just have a whole room full of them.
For large boxes, U-Haul sells them. There's one on 4th ave and 6th st. -
If you live near any kind of small health facility, it's worth asking them about boxes. The chemicals they use (bleach, alcohols, etc.) that some of them use are shipped in very sturdy, often larger boxes.
I got some great boxes from the dialysis clinic on Flatbush (near the old blockbuster) for our last move.
Also, if you have time, just keep an eye on craigslist and freecycle b/c often people post the boxes they just used to move there. -
Wait, didn't you just move bck to PS a few months ago?
When I moved lasttime I purchased boxes online for cheap. I had to put them together myself, but they were clean. -
Craigslist, Check under free, People are always recycling their moving boxes there. Same sizes great stacking and all that was said above.

Last time I moved, I got these boxes at Home Depot that I really liked. They are called Wardrobe boxes, and they have a crossbar so you can take clothes, coats, etc out of the closet and hang them right in the box. Super easy to pack and unpack, because you don't have to take everything off the hangers.
I think the boxes were 16.00 for two. Moving companies sell these also, but for much more money.
My other tip is to purchase a small boxcutter knife with a snap-off blade which I found indispensable for tape, and when unpacking. -
hey, to the person called susanyun who PM'd me about boxes, i can't get this program to send my reply, which is yes, i'll take them. i don't exactly know how to resolve this without giving you my contact info in public, but here's what i'm going to try: booklaw, another brooklynian, has my email address and phone number. can you PM him with who you are and why your contacting, and your contact information? i will give him a head's up and ask him to reply to you with my contact info as well, and to pass on the contact info you give him. in case you haven't done this before, you PM him by going into "messages" and entering "booklaw"...
thanks so much. -
I, too, have boxes. Many boxes. For anyone who wants them.

Last time I moved, my best boxes came from Barnes and Noble. I went in one afternoon and asked them to set aside some boxes for me (not destroyed when they broke them down). They told me what time I should come back to pick them up. They were great sturdy boxes in which books had been shipped.
Also, because of my job, I recently heard something about a new service called my move options (dot com?) where they show up with recycleable containers, help you pack the truck - help, not do it all for you - and then they ship the stuff for you. I know very little about it, but it might be worth checking out.
