i always eat food from watana. i've never had a bad meal. i've gone there in person and loved it.

tonight i ordered and as the delivery guy walked upstairs he looked at the bill and said, "it's $14.15, so $15." which, actually, is what i gave him because that's not ok. he was going to get a whole lot more.

i'm a real fan of this restaurant, should i tell the people who own the place?

  • Are you really worried over 75 cents?
  • the amount of $$ has nothing to do with it.
  • I agree, the rounding up is B.S. But I don't think it's worth complaining to the owners over. I would have done the same thing, and the dude would have lost out on what would probably have been a $4 or $5 tip. He'll hopefully learn his lesson that way. If not, then he's only screwing himself.
  • If he was short the coins to give back as change, he should have just said $14.

watana hell was he thinking. #-o

How do you think he'll "learn his lesson" if somebody doesn't say "because you rounded up my bill by $0.85, I am not going to give you the tip I had intended to give you...."?

People don't make the connection unless you tell them so. He'll just think you're a cheap fuck.

That said, I would not call Watana over $0.85. If it pissed me off that much, I would have said something to the delivery guy.

I've had taxi drivers (mostly from Eastern, because that's who I use 95% of the time) try to charge me $8 for what I *know* is a $7 fare. I also ask the dispatcher how much the fare is on the phone if I am going somewhere new. Then, if a driver tries to up the charges by a buck or two, I will say "you know, I take this trip all the time, so I know what the fare is (and I assume that they do as well, unless for some reason I think they are brand new). I would have given you that money (and more) in a tip if you hadn't tried to rip me off". ....and, btw, if the driver gives me attitude after that conversation THEN I would call the dispatcher and say something (the same approach for Watana )

At least then the person understands the cause and effect. People can't read your mind. Just sayin'.
  • Life is too short to get upset over this. I say - file it away in the part of your brain reserved for memories of minor annoyances and slights and treat yourself to an extra scoop of ice cream after dinner.

and then there is this ^

In the case of Watana, it would not have gotten me annoyed to the point of slamming them online.
  • It's annoying, certainly; but I'm loathe to p!ss off delivery guys b/c I worry that I'll get blacklisted by the restaurant. I would short tip (maybe a buck rather than $4) and let it go.
  • Potter what do you get from them? I never find their menu appealing and I walk by on the way home every night wondering what ppl are eating. Is it worth it to be so pissed?
  • scarlett, i usually get the basil/cashew shrimp (goong pa med ma mook, i think) and sticky rice. they have it in chicken as well. it definitely loses something when it gets delivered.

worth getting pissed over this one incident? no. i was angry when i posted. but this happens so often from so many places i order from. i'm good tipper, i don't like being "tricked" to give someone more $$ (because if it had been $15 i'd have handed him a twenty without thinking about it)
  • I would have asked for a dollar back. Hee. That sounds yummy.
  • it's yummy and spicy. even better when you down it with some cold reisling.

    agree
  • normally when i order out, i ask for how much in advance and when the guys come, i already have tip etc.. in there cause most of them don't know how to say the correct amount in English anyway. they usually can say larger amounts but not the small amounts including change.
  • Call the place and let them know their delivery guys are falsifying receipts. Cuz that's what it is when you round up so aggressively!

Same thing happened to me, at another place. I didn't realize until i saw the receipt in the bag. It pissed me off because I always tip well, but now the delivery guy got what...a 30% tip?? more than in-store? f'that.

    It's never happened again.
  • I still can't get over the name of this place.

  • The food is pretty good (not as good as Song though). I won't do delivery though because it can take them a full hour to show up. Rounding up the price is crazy. The problem is that so many delivery people do not speak English well, so explaining your displeasure about the rounding may actually just makes thing tense.

I really like the food at Beet, but have given up on their delivery and will only eat in.

    .
exactly, i've had this happen at several other places as well--it once happened from anthony's and i called and spoke with them.

i get that their english might not be good, but i don't find it coincidental that they're rounding up to the next dollar amount.

they round up as i said because they can't say the amount in change. they normally can say the bigger numbers in front whole numbers. if you added in change its harder.
  • I like Watana, but, frankly, I'd be more upset that they charge for white steamed rice.

but it's sticky rice. delicious sticky rice. and i agree, but it's so good!
  • We ordered Japanese from Gen the other night- the guy read the amount (I'd already known it because they make it a habit to tell you over the phone) and he rounded DOWN. I was impressed.

It made me think of you though, Pot.
