At least 10 witness statements have been submitted to the Park Department. No one is stating that every trashed tree in Brooklyn is work, but several people are stating that the trashed trees on Underhill, Classon, and in Mount Prospect Park during the nights of July 11th and July 12th are.
are you saying 10 people witnessed him doing this? i'm a little unclear from your post.

if so, go get him. i'd imagine that he and his family would have a big fine to pay.
The world of logical, organized "law and order" you imagine, and the world I live in, are radically different places.

Please read this thread regarding all the 911 and 311 calls made as they witnessed him doing the damage.
  • sorry if i missed that part of the thread. if 10 different people are seeing this guy do this, then i'm not gonna call them liars.

MHA just rubs me the wrong way. he sticks his nose in every possible issue in this neighborhood, creating drama and fanning flames whenever possible. when i saw that he started this thread, a red flag went up.

We should focus on the message and not the messenger. I thought this thread might be a bit of overstatement, until I had a conversation with a 27 year old black man who works in the neighborhood who related his run-ins with Steve on Eastern Parkway late at night on his way to the subway. He corroborated 1) a black guy in Jordan gear is ripping down tree branches and 2) said guy has on several occasions threatened/menaced/"flexed on" folks including him.

I don't think MHA is creating drama, any more than those folks who post the "I heard gunshots", "So-and-so business sucks", or "my neighbors are assholes" threads. Once other people have come here to say yes this is happening, and yes, the guy you think is doing it is the same guy I think is doing it, it stops being about MHA's particular agenda and becomes a discussion about how the community should respond.

As far as MHA himself is concerned, as my grandmother would say "Even a broken clock is right twice a day".

When Steve hit Bergen yesterday he only saw his demons on the trees closer to Franklin Avenue. Could it be because there was a big barbecue on Bergen near Classon? Pretty interesting that he didn't touch any of the trees where there were a bunch of people hanging out, including a large group of big guys. Big guys who might not have appreciated Steve ripping branches off the trees that were providing some shade for them. Steve preferred to damage trees in front of buildings where no one was around to interfere.
i'm pretty sure that youre suggesting he doesn't really hallucinate, and that he's somehow faking his schizophrenia, seeing or hearing whatever he sees and hears selectively. nice.
Not quite, I don't doubt that Steve has mental problems. I believe though that he's gotten away with a lot of shit because he's "crazy" and because he's a big guy. He's gotten used to doing what he does with no real consequences, most likely for his whole life. I believe he avoided the trees where people were hanging out because, on some level, he was aware that those guys could have beat the crap out of him.
  • Caseo - please keep in mind the wisdom of homeowners grandmother, as well as the fact that PETA rarely protests outside of motorcycle club houses in objection to thier leather jackets.

    No objection
  • Good point, whynot. Due to personal reasons, I tend to have a very strong reaction to people with mental disorders who don't take their meds.
  • ....which leads back to my discussion of this society lacking a system to provide care for those who are too ill to consent.

or, in layman's terms: "know what is good for them".

[On a related note, I just ordered a magic wand from ebay. When it arrives, I'll waive it at the court houses then at his address.]

Seriously. At least if it didn't make the problems disappear, you wouldn't care so much!

I mean its made by a reputable company, Hitachi. It's gotta work on someone. ....why did I go with the cheap one?!

Clearly, I should have PM'd Flexi as soon as the thought entered my mind. This board is great, it has an expert for every single topic.

Either an expert or one who thinks they are. Either way, it's a win

UPI: Jails Are Top Mental Health Institutions
    Tuesday, July 13, 2010 6:45 AM

NYAPRS Note: Recognizing that the big city jails are our most populous mental health institutions, the International Association for Forensic and Correctional Psychology has issued recommendations they say will improve care and reduce local governmental liability to litigation.

Jails Are Top Mental Health Institutions

United Press International Health News July 12, 2010

LOS ANGELES, July 12 (UPI) -- New York's Riker's Island, Chicago's Cook County Jail and the Los Angeles County Jail are the largest mental health institutions in the nation, a study found.

Members of the International Association for Forensic and Correctional Psychology say 15 percent of the inmates of those three jails are mentally ill, making penal institutions -- not hospitals -- the three largest U.S. mental health institutions.

The association charged a committee to revise their psychological standards for jails, prisons, correctional facilities and agencies, which were first published in 1980.

Committee members say the revised standards, published in the journal Criminal Justice and Behavior, will benefit institutional security and help integrate former inmates back into the community, and may reduce litigation due to inadequate correctional mental health services.

"Offenders, mentally ill or not, entrusted to the custody of correctional facilities and agencies, benefit in a number of ways from the highest quality of rehabilitative and mental health services," committee chair Richard Althouse says in a statement.

Althouse and colleagues hope the revised standards, which include organizational policies and ethical principles to govern areas such as intake, staffing, suicide prevention and intervention, keeping records and research will guide administrators and clinicians in providing optimal mental health services.

  • Why don't we encourage Steve to become a Certified Citizens Pruner through Trees New York?

Aren't they able to be trusted with at least hand tools? Nope, he doesn't qualify.

Caseo and I seem to agree that assembling large groups of men around every tree and have them hanging out and BBQing, 24/7/365 might also be effective. (note: some blocks seem to have already enacted this plan)

Note "effective" is a different word than "practical".

Don't worry, I could tell by your intonation. Welcome to Brooklynian
  • people could chase him with butterfly nets?

or you could set up a trap akin to the one that snagged han, chewie, and co. on Endor in Return of the Jedi.
  • and now, returning to the serious work at hand:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On behalf of Council Member James I wanted to report back to the community on the status of efforts to hospitalize Steve and more importantly to get him mental health assistance he needs.

Myself along with an APS case worker in consultation with the 77th precinct met at Steve’s home today in order to assess his condition. Unfortunately, Steve was not home and his mother has not seen him in a couple of days. We are currently checking the hospitals to see if he has been admitted.

The APS case worker and I will revisit the home Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Please be assured that Council Member James has been diligently working to remedy this situation as quickly as possible.

    Ms Davis-Elliot,

I was forwarded an update about your visit to Steve's home this morning. Thank you for taking the time to personally attend to this matter of importance to our community.

I just wanted to add that the telltale marks of Steve's destruction were found in the vicinity of Underhill and Sterling/Lincoln/St. Johns Place last night (7/13) around 11pm. Unless he was hospitalized in the last 12-18 hours, I suspect he is still active in the neighborhood. Our concern for his safety and the safety of neighborhood residents remains elevated.

Please add me to your distribution list for future updates, and let me know if there is anything I can do to help achieve resolution in this matter.

  • Dayum,
MHA gets no love regardless of what he does! MHA has to be liked before what he says is taken as legitimate!? Oy. MHA is laughing his ass off. It's not about MHA it's about Steve! And no, I wouldn't call Steve retarded if he had a cognitive issue that limits rational thought. But yeah, I am gonna stick to my guns and call him crazy. Homeboy IS crazy. Mr. Met, have you ever seen Steve? You see him jump up and down on a branch that took a decade to grow and then you tell me he isn't crazy. When did calling irrational behavior 'crazy' become inappropriate??!

Whynot, I don't buy the 'I haven't seen Steve in a couple of days' rhetoric. I saw Steve yesterday! He had on a red Michael Jordan t-shirt and his blue denim shorts with the white Air Jordan high top sneakers. He was doing that thing where it looks like he is reeling in fish with his right hand. He stood at the corner of Eastern Parkway and Franklin Avenue, across the street from the construction site. [When you came by,] Steve was either home, or on the street looking for new trees to break. I am going to PM you with some stuff about Steve that I don't think it's wise be said here, and yes, Mr. Met, it is hearsay, but whose information value though arguably suspect is likely true.

Kinda burned that I would be thrown in the category of not being considered truthful just because I am not agreed with or liked. Why should that even matter!? 1+1 = 2 REGARDLESS of who says it. You have to like someone before you can see the legitimacy of their argument Mr. Met? Really? Wow dude. Real mature.

Regarding danger and Steve: Steve IS dangerous. If Mr. Met and others took time to read the beginnings of this thread they would see the many encounters others have had with him where they felt that to confront him would be to risk their lives and their LIMBS. Steve has wreaked arborial havoc on so many trees around here. As a person who has spent a great deal of time caring for a number of trees in this neighborhood it pisses me off to no end that he is still on the street. I think it's incredibly irresponisble of those who are his guardians to allow him to remain on the street. Okay, maybe Steve can't help being who he is, but his mother, and whomever else cares for him can, and they haven't. And to hear that his mother stated she has not seen him in a few days, and to infer that he has not been home -- that's a straight up lie. That alters how I see his mother, and the 'plight' she is enduring.

    Whynot, look for the PM.
  • <purespeculation>Maybe his mother depends on his SSI checks, which might stop coming if he is in jail or institutionalized.</purespeculation>
  • Hmmm Carnivore, pray tell, what makes you think he receives a SSI cheque?
  • MHA wrote: Hmmm Carnivore, pray tell, what makes you think he receives a SSI cheque?
I've been operating under a similar assumption...may have something to do with this? I believed it...must mean I like you??

    MHA wrote:
I have spoken to his neighbors and all have said that they are afraid of him. I had a conversation with a guy who claims to be his brother-in-law, and he told me at some point in the past, this guy pulled a knife on him. He also told me that this guy receives money from the state for his disability, and with it he buys services from whores whom he brings into his mother's house.
  • Jeepers Arches,
I take it you've never appreciated the wry quality of British comedy?
  • Not true, your posts often make be flash back to this classic!

But i'll admit to perhaps missing the sarcasm this time around. Carry on.
  • You like me arches??

    I love the clip. :D
  • Mrs Whynot went into work late today, and walked Dude TODAY (July 13th) at noon along EP between Washington and Underhill. No tree damage.

Mrs Whynot walked Dude TODAY after work at around 6 PM. Mrs. Whynot is verrrrry angry, and took photos before Whynot got home.

    Did she see him? Nope.

Does it seem he is still around? Yup.
