Underhill storefront getting a facelift
I walked by the old tattoo place on Underhill between St. Johns & Sterling - the one several DH people looked at renting only to balk at the ridiculous rental price. Anyway the gate was open and a couple of guys were working inside. Looked like a fresh coat of pastel paint had just gone up. Is that the future location of the fabled Underhill Spa?
Does anyone else find the idea of a spa on Underhill to be as funny as I do?

Yes. A few months a go I saw an older Asian woman taking down the "for rent" sign and asked her what was the plan for the place. She said that it was going to be a spa. It initially seemed like an odd location to me, but there aren't any other competitors within a few blocks, so maybe not. Also, once they finish that giant condo on St Johns and Plaza, I think that whole stretch of Unerhill is going to change dramatically in terms of the commercial properties at least. There's going to be a huge influx of relatively affluent people who are going to want to buy stuff, and I'm not sure Hood Hing is going to cut it alone. I bet the stretch between Sterling and Eastern Parkway on Underhill is going to be unrecognizable within 5 years.

You know, that particular block I wouldn't be sorry to see changed. The mysterious video-game repair place, the bullet-proof glass in the chinese restaurant, the closed tattoo place, the people mysteriously hanging out in the closed laundry on the corner... and most of the time it's mostly steel-shuttered. Maybe it's because I'm new, but steel shutters are one of the worst things about Brooklyn, even if they're understandable. As long as no gleaming-glass-megalopolis developers get any ideas, I'm all for it looking a lot different. You think? -

yes, i agree that block could use something. i just selfishly worry about the pace of the block changing. one of the things i love about sterling & underhill is that it is so sleepy. -
i'm always for change. cant stand the same sight(stores) over and over again. unless its nature or person.

I do completely agree, SarahB; Southpaw is good where it is and really doesn't need to move into the Impact Theater. And if it were even a little more sleepy, I might actually be able to get a drier at the 2-Way.
(What IS the 2nd way, anyway?) -
(What IS the 2nd way, anyway?)
2 ways:
1st way - have them do your laundry
2nd way - do your own damn laundry -

While I'm also halfway psyched about the block changing for the better, and halfway liking it the way it is, I'm all-the-way terrified about my rent going through the roof when I'm up for renewal next year.
I wouldn't have thought it possible when I moved in three years ago, but I may then find myself - gulp - priced out of PH.

You francophiliacs who live on 'place du sterling ' et 'sous la colline': have you ever accidentally entered an address on Sterling Place into GoogleMaps without typing "Brooklyn"?
It returns a map of lovely Rue du Sterling ... just east of Bordeaux.
ROAD TRIP!

Merci, Che! J'ai un belle-frere qui habite en France.
(et maintenant: comme moi, non?). Vive la Sterling! -
Mais, on doit dire beau-frere, il me semble.
And I'm raising a glass of red... to growth on Underhill. -

Tres bien ensemble
Sorry - the only french I know...
Howdy, Stranger!
