fyi, it's not BYO anymore.
Bombay Massala on Franklin is great We usually do take-out, but when you eat in, you can sit in the back garden (nice!), get all-you-can-eat roti and rice (rather than paying for roti with take-out), and they usually give a complimentary dessert or pudding at the end of the meal. They are really friendly when you eat-in too. Also, it's BYOB, which is nice since one of my favorite wine shops/bodegas for beer is on that block too.
.
So I noticed last night when I went with my folks. Still a nice time, though. -
maybe 718-398-3054 ? Not sure, though...
-
What's up with this place? I guess it's called Sepid. Is it ever going to open?
-
I made fish vindaloo last night, does that help?
-
Bombay Masala is good.
Best Indian food i've had is Roti Boti in Queens. -
The aforementioned Sapid is open. I stopped by and grabbed a menu.

Mrs. Whynot and I have just returned from Sapid

....let the reviews begin! Let us patronize it and then tell him about this fine thread..... -
I'm gonna let Carnivore go before I do. He's brave. I'm afraid of mediocre Indian.
-
Thanks for the review, whynot. Based on your post, I'm going to give this place a try.

True. But there is a large Bangladeshi community in Brooklyn. The guys who run Bombay Masala are actually Bangladeshi.
I think the food is pretty good. My only complaint is that they serve watery, British-style tea instead of chai. Otherwise though they do a great job impersonating an Indian restaurant with the Bollywood videos running and the pictures of the Taj Mahal all over the place. -
We went there tonight--same basic experience as detailed by whynot above, with the exception that the television was showing Being Human on BBC America.
The pakoras were amazing. Everything was really good. Hard to compare it to Bombay Masala or Joy (it certainly is up there with them, but we tried different dishes at each), but these folks know how to cook.
I hope it makes it. -
I ordered delivery from Sapid tonight--a simple dinner of plain naan, papadum, and chicken tikka masala. I definitely give it the thumbs up. It was about equally good as Joy, but quite different. (I know some others on this board don't like Joy and will see that as a negative, not an endorsement. Oh well.)
-
Repeat customers.
Food was every bit as good as last time--I think they're better than Joy and Bombay Masala by about half a nose.
20% discount for those eating dinner in. We were still the only ones there for much of the time.
We really want this place to make it. Give it some love. -
Went there recently and had a very good dinner. We ate in and were the only couple there through out most of our meal, but had a very pleasant time.
1 appetizer, 2 entrees, a tea, a soda and an order of naan all came out to less than $25 when they took off the 20% off (before tip, but after tax). And on top of that they gave us desserts on the house.
Really hope this place makes it. So far, they definitely get my seal of approval. -
I ordered from them again and was even more impressed than the first time. This place is seriously good.
-
I'll be going to India again (4th time) in October, so I have to try this sometime before then. If I tried it after I got back, I don't think it would really be a fair review. I'll report back soon, hopefully sometime this week.

They are a very good place. My girlfriend and I went tonight around 10, knowing they were closing at 11. We grabbed a bottle of wine at the corner of Bergen and Washington and went in for a quick dinner. The service was great, and even though we were the only dine in customers it wasn't awkward (right now they are offering 20% off dine in). The food was delicious, we had samosas, a cauliflower dish and an okra dish (vegetarian). They insisted that we stay and finish our meal, but the portions were large and we didn't want to stay too far past closing. They are definitely worth checking out, very nice people.

Subject: highly recommended
So, I love Indian food (and so does gf), but we rarely eat it, for reasons I cannot explain.
We decided to give Sapid a try tonight since we live very close to it, and let me tell you, it was well worth it.
The food was incredible. I highly recommend the okra dish, which unfortunately isn't listed on their online menu.
I can't say much else besides: please give this place a try if you haven't already! We were the only ones in there and I want this place to live on. We repeatedly told them that we'd be back again, and it ain't no lie.
The helpings are plentiful and so we took leftovers home. I can't wait to digest and have more! -
ex_spectator and ghostinthemachine, are you a couple?
-
good detective work.

we both wrote reviews because we wanted to help get the word out. -
It looks very shill-like Ex & Ghost.. which serves the opposite of what you intended. Readers & moderators here frown heavily upon it.
If you have a vested interest in the place (owner/worker/friend) be upfront about it from the start. Or yeah say, Hey I was with __ above and we both enjoyed the___.... so it's all out there. No one claims you were a shiller, but we get those constantly as do many websites... -
Seriously? Both of us went to dinner there and we both liked it, why should only one of us be able to write a review? We didn't have a single experience. I have absolutely no vested interest in any way, shape or form. I live on Washington Ave and want to see the businesses that open here make it. Would you rather see empty store fronts on the street? There was absolutely nothing deceptive in the write up and I know nobody involved in their business.
-
Well said, ex_spectator. The moderators here tend to be micro-managers.
-
There is nothing wrong with it. But if you participate on many message boards you can see how this looks to a reader from the outside? Especially as a one time poster who only registers to send a glowing review about a place at the same time as another member from the same computer. Ya know?
Anyway, moving on. Glad you liked the place. -
Different computers. Same wi-fi. Not a problem, we can all move along now!
-
pass the naan and okra! -
In addition to the good response here, Sapid is also getting very good reviews on Yelp ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/sapid-indian-food-brooklyn ).[/url]

Burgess B's review on Yelp looks remarkably similar to ex-spectator's.

Ordered in from them tonight. I went the typical route and got samosas and chicken tikka masala.
Samosas were excellent! The tikka masala, while rich in taste, was not the thick sauce I'm used to. It was downright thin. The portions were a nice size and I went with their take out deal where you get a choice of app, choice of main course, it comes with naan, the dipping sauces (which were really good, btw), and rice pudding for dessert all for $13.95.
Worth it.
Nice phone lady too. :thumright: -
Sorry that we sometimes accidentally micromanage. The choices at Chez Brooklynian are "Pure chaos and spam" or "Occasional annoying micromanagement". I give the latter four stars (and neither is listed on our online menu)...
