Advice on replacing stolen NYS Driver's License

Subject: Advice on replacing stolen NYS Driver's License

My license was stolen yesterday (along w/wallet, etc.).

I am up for my 10-year renewal after August 6.

Went to report to NYPD. They told me to come back with a doc from my bank showing that a card was used fraudulently. That way they can use larceny and identity theft as reason for report.

Can't get a bank report until Tuesday because...the transaction is "pending" until then.

So, what will happen next? Where is the best place, in person, to apply. If I have a NYPD report (as posted on the NYS DMV) the $17.50 replacement fee is waved. However, I will still need a new license anyway in another month Also, don't have an "enhanced" license for travel. Any advice?

Perhaps things are just fuzzy? or are there too many options.
Thanks.

  • How was the license stolen? You can make a Police report for lost or stolen property and they will give you a form to have it replaced at DMV. You can just renew your license now before it expires, either way you have to pay a fee. You most likely have to take an eye exam at DMV so might as well just go down there. You dont need a Police report to replace your license.
  • In order for the police to file just ONE report / larceny and identity theft, I must wait until the bank refunds my money, take the report to the police and fill out a form. This, they tell me at the desk, keeps it to one report rather than two or three. Administratively good for them. I want to make sure about reporting identity theft so this is what must be done first.
  • All you said was that your license was stolen nothing about identity theft.
  • Just renew your license early and don't worry about the lost/stolen one. DMV issues you a new license when you renew. No matter you have to pay the renewal fee so...
  • The enhanced driver's license is only good for land and sea travel, if you plan to fly to a non-USA destination you'll need a passport book.

    See http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/index.html

Still, the enhanced driver's license might be good if you plan to drive to Canada or Mexico, or take a closed loop cruise from the USA.
