Exterminator? — Brooklynian

Exterminator?

Nothing like brushing your teeth while you watch a small cockroach climb up your bathroom wall....

Anyone out there know of a friendly thorough bug exterminator that serves the Prospect Heights Area? The one for my building sucks.

Thanks for any help...

  • I'd do it yourself. If you watch what an exterminator actually does it's pretty minimal. They will basically spray some stuff in the corner of your bathroom and kitchen and charge you $100 for the service.

Go to Lowes or HD or some other hardware store and get the spray yourself. For $6 you can get a gallon that will last forever.

It may not be as strong as the stuff an exterminator uses but unless you have a really bad infestation it will be more than enough.

Boric acid is also another very effective product for roach control although you will see powder wherever you put it. Not a big deal if you can get it behind cabinets and so forth but I prefer spraying since you don't see it.
  • i think that gel in the tube is better, less messy, safer for pets. and i've heard exterminators say it works better.

personally, i see one cockroach and buy three boxes of combat, and the gel, and pray i don't see another.
  • i used boric acid the last time a little critter showed up in my kitchen. haven't seen once since.
  • Spray and/or boric acid plus traps (plus "eggstoppers") work fine if you see a few roaches. If you have a major infestation, you've got to go with the caulk and bomb approach. Actually, caulking up any cracks is a good idea anyway. See this discussion from the PS board here:

  • i have seriously thought about hermetically sealing my kitchen with caulk and spray foam
  • i've heard when the weather gets really hot and sticky like this, one or two tend to find their way inside (i'm also on the 4th floor so i don't know if it's worse in the apts below). the few that i have seen were during this type of weather. i don't think my walls are crawling with them (shudder at the thought).
