I have an Idea RE: Crime Threads — Brooklynian

I have an Idea RE: Crime Threads

Instead of the numerous posts about Muggings, Assaults, Burglaries and our all time favorite "Shots Fired" Threads. Why don't you guys at Daily Heights make a Crime Blog where everyone can post their stories?

Comments

  • I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this, so I'm not sure what to think of it. Do you mean an entirely separate site from Brooklynian? If so, when you say blog, do you really mean message board format, like Brooklynian? Or one big thread on the CH board where all new crime stories get added? Or a separate board on Brooklynian like the Brooklyn Pets, Brooklyn Booze, Brooklyn Eats, etc. board (it could be called "Brooklynian Crime Blotter").
  • How bout a sticky at the top of each Board where people can add their Crime stories, instead of mutiple Robbery/Assault/Gunshot threads scaring the living daylights out of anyone perusing through the Forums. Just a thought
  • Apparently people like to know about and inform their neighbors of criminal activity, based on specific location (i.e. ACK! St Johns!)

Crown Heightsers, would you rather check the local blotter posted at the top of the nabe forum instead? One endless somewhat unwieldy list?

I could see where sometimes it would work (like the since vandalized Google Map of crime locations) but sometimes specific threads build into more of a story or a give and take. People use the boards as they like...

Sometimes telling a crime story is someone's first post here, and even if it's not, they're upset. Could we expect people to report to the appropriate thread?

King, You might want to address the problem behind all these random stories about crime. Years ago (at least 10 or 12) when I was looking for a school for one of my kids the first thing I did was stop in to the local precinct and asked what was going on. Anybody in earshot was happy to oblige, even suggesting the best way to walk to the subway or what times to avoid certain areas. That to me was the police looking out for me and mine. Now a days the police direct you to the local's statistics on line. This is worthless when you need information on a specific block or building.
I don't disagree that these threads on "shots fired" are kind of worthless but without information that is actively withheld from us that is all we have.
  • well, how about the "I got mugged today" thread that makes it seems like everyday is "today"?

When a newspaper runs a crime blotter, the story runs once and then it is gone. Lazy readers think that some other reader is getting mugged everyday, because the post is always there ...and people are always commenting on it.

I'd at least like the threads to show when they were started, as opposed to simply when they were last commented on.

...I have no idea how we could give people perspective (i.e. even though there is crime, it is actually going down.)

And, perhaps something like, "yes, Virginia, those guys hanging out on the corner are drug dealers. Please act accordingly."

or something like, "yes, Virginia, when you use your cell phone and IPOD like your are "all that" some people do get annoyed at you. Please be discreet in showing off your wealth"
  • Keep it the way it currently is. If it weren't for crime posts, activity on the Crown Heights board would drop by at least 50%.
  • I think it's a good idea. If it were not for this board I would not have heard of %99.9 of the crime, except for the unfortunate shooting on Frxnklin Ave I walked into.

It kinds of gives people new to the neighborhood a reality check as to what areas are experiencing trouble and what patterns are developing. Ever since I moved her a year ago I though nothing of skateboarding down the street talking on my iPhone. Now, I'm starting to realize that people are mugging people for the silliest of reasons. I'm more aware because of this blog.

I think it would be an excellent idea.
  • I think we should keep the format as is. Enabling a new thread for every incident better highlights the frequency of the incidents
  • Hey,
    Whatever became of this idea?
  • I guess the idea didn't catch on, but I'm glad theres a place for women to discuss important things like waxing their Hoo Haa
  • We also never reached an agreement on when we are sensationalizing particular crime, much less when a crime should be forgotten so we can lull ourselves into a sense of safety.

    So much work remains undone.

It's like we'd rather talk about where to eat next.
  • Let's table this issue for the subcommittee to discuss offline. When they have reached a consensus, they can bring their findings back to the full committee and we can discuss it again. I nominate MHA, WhyFi, Cool The Kid, Flexichick, Hamilton, Jack Krohn, Karl the Druid, and KWAC to serve on the subcommittee.

[I have served on too many committees.]
  • I can't think of a more distinquished group of people
  • Sweet - who's bringing the beer? I've got the malt liquor covered.
  • Wait, so we should make one post per subject topic?

    One on bars
    One on bikes
    One on crime

    yeahNO
  • ^^^. He has a point.

How would we document when a bike is stolen from outside Franklin Park?

    It would fit all categories.
  • hey KWAC, you should just stop all the crimes before they become threads.

    thx.

Because of this thread, I have been thinking about hoo haa's all afternoon, and have yet to commit a crime.
  • On this subject, a partial list that is comprehensive by precinct is:

  • Well, I thought it was a good idea.
  • I havent figured out the logistics of such a thread, but I too am thinking about waxed Hoo Ha, maybe we can do a poll for that one too.
    Waxed
    Landing strip
    Shaved
