Subject: Planning to move to St Marks and Kingston. How's the area?

Hi,
I'm looking into moving to St. Marks, between Kingston and Albany. I'd appreciate if anybody can give some tip about the area.

    I had a friend who lived there for a while and now have another set of friends who lives there now.

    The one who moved out liked the apartment but found that there was NOTHING to do in the area -- walked to Nostrand or Franklin or further to get a drink or good meal. Besides that complaint he was fine with it - but his girlfriend (A teeny-tiny white girl) felt uncomfortable walking down the street and being cat-called at all the time. She wouldn't walk at night by herself. But that was HER. So if you are worried about safety in your question, go and see how YOU feel. They never were mugged, etc. so it was more how she felt.

    My friends who are there now like the apartment (a lot of gut-renovation on the block) but also hate that they have to travel to do much and only have the 3 train or C train really close. Also, they say that parking is tough since the block doesn't go through because of the kids' park, but not sure if that applies to you either.

    You don't have to walk that far to get a drink or a good meal. It just depends on if you want to eat at a New American restaurant owned & patronized mainly by middle class, white, non-Hasidic-Jewish, people. If you don't need that every day, you will be ok. I personally like the Kingston area, tons of interesting restaurants, coffee shop, and a quick bike ride anywhere. It is also right by the Jewish Childrens Museum.. which may or may not be interest, but at least there's an area landmark. Short walk to good stuff on Fulton.

    I lived on Albany & St Johns for a while and LOVED the area. (I am a teeny tiny Asian woman.) My apartment was even on an episode of "Queer Eye" though that was filmed long before I'd moved in :)

    just dont hang out late on Bergen & Kingston and you'll be fine.

    i lived on brooklyn at dean for a year.

    i consider kingston to be the last "nice" avenue heading east. that's just me, though.

    i can confirm that there is NOTHING to do around there, though.

    If you have a bike and aren't easily shaken you should be fine. It would help to know more about you though Solidrocks.

    Transportation was the difference between me being OK with my last place (Bergen + NYA) and my gf absolutely hating it. I had a bike and stickshift car and could move around as needed... while I didn't like the crackheads on my block, outside of that it was fine. My girlfriend however couldn't drive my car and can't ride a bike, so she was at the mercy of the A train and various buses for anything outside of walking distance. Occasionally we would walk over to Franklin or take the bus to Vandy (after i sold my car), but that was a pain compared to when I lived on Classon & where I am now.

    Also definitely make sure you meet your neighbors beforehand and try to find out whether or not the specific block you live on has any unique problems (drug spots, loud neighbors, etc.). You can literally go from one block to the next and it will be a world of difference.

    I guess I meant like a sit-down place or good variety (Mexican, American, Thai, etc.) Also -- what bars are in the area for a drink? I'd wander back over to check them out..

    Thanks for your answers; they sound good. My gf and I are planning to move to St. Marks, between Kingston and Albany. We're both white looking Hispanics. We've been through a lot back in our countries, so this should be fine.
