There will be a rally on Thursday August 12th at noon at City Hall in Manhattan to protest the slaughter of the Prospect Park geese and the proposed massacre of 170,000 more in the next year. Please mark the date, and I will post more details as they are available.
And just to get it out of the way, the inevitable: Foie gras, yum! And: they should feed the dead geese to the homeless. -
Leave the homeless out of this.
...nobody wants those geese. -
We saw 14 geese on the Prospect Park lake last Saturday. Totally pointless culling.
-
You do realize that the goal is not complete elimination, right?
....just like we will always have rats, we will always have geese.
The goal is likely to keep the population under control in order to reduce the risk of contact with airplanes (or, in the case, of rats: disease). -

Massacre? Talk about hyperbole! The geese are pests that pose a threat to human life and safety.

It must be a literal holocaust every time you eat a bowl of rice. Think of all those lives extinguished!
P.S. The second attempt to Godwin this. -
(Jamzer: After some time elapses, this is the point in most threads where someone usually makes a comment about Strollers ruining the lives of singles, and it becomes a huge debate. It is the Park Slope version of Godwin. People who are outraged at dog poop also sometimes use this occasion to vent)

Wiping out two thirds of a population that has very little impact on air safety seems extreme to me. There are non-lethal ways to control the population. If you're ok with the killing, don't come to the rally. I figured some people here might want to know about it.
Again, 8/12, noon, City Hall. -
I think I have a compromise here...if more geese come back, why not just strap their wings down or somehow disable their flying ability? I'll leave the technical aspects of that to the experts, but it seems that if we had live geese that can't mess with planes everyone would be happy.

The geese are threats to human life and safety only because:
A. humans apparently can't design an airplane that can safely share the skies with geese
and
B. humans would rather not take the train. -
Finally, Danny and I agree on something.
A + B = C
C= geese death
....but I'm not sure where we go from here. Until someone can eliminate either A or B, there will always be C. -

No, we don't currently have a functional commuter train system in this country. If we had high speed rails like they do in many other parts of the world, many would take them. There are many reasons why we don't have that system here, and it's much more complex than "humans would rather not take the train" which you might realize if you read the article from the Economist that I posted. Even if that dream came true, it would take many years and do nothing to address the threat of the geese to human safety and lives now. -

yeah . . . my understanding is that the Prospect Park geese kinda stay put in their cushy Prospect Park home, and the birds that get stuck in planes are migrating from Canada. So, gassing those PP geese didn't do a damn thing to help human air safety - that was the point, right?
Again, 8/12, noon, City Hall.
FIDO's been putting out a lot of info and press reports about the geese. Get on their mailing list if you want to keep up...

This is a good point.
...If this is going to make sense, we have to figure out which ones are truly Canadian.
I'm glad we don't have to worry about the Americanized Canadian Geese.
They would never even think ascending to 2000 feet over the Great Meadow to be hit by one of the planes that seem to be headed every 2 minutes to LaGuardia. Nope, our geese are thankful for all of the Goldfish crackers and bread we give them, and would never betray us. If they did, it would be kinda like an ex military guy bombing a federal building. (um, Timothy McVeigh? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_McVeigh).
Nope, our geese are loyal patriots. We can trust them. I'm sure they confirmed how the ones that brought down that plane onto the Hudson were transient, migrating geese.
So, back to those damn illegal Canadian Geese.... How should we figure out which ones they are?
accents?
bottles of Molson beer nearby?
love of hockey?
thermal underwear?
The French Canadian geese will be asked different questions, of course.
Once we determine which are the enemy, we will leave the American ones alone.
So far Drano has the best idea, and I think giant rubber bands could be put around the those damn Canadian ones to prevent them from flying. Let's review:
Step 1: Determine their immigration status.
Step 2. Determine their loyalty to the country. (includes research on their background for milita activity)
Step 3: Danny Hellman and I would lure the ones deemed to be dangerous with tasty organic, vegan, (oxymoronic?), treats.
Step 4: Then we'd hire this guy to peacefully slip one of his necklaces over them, one by one. He looks like he'd work for cheap.
You gotta admit, this plan is the best so far. -
If for some reason (?!) the above plan is deemed to be unfeasible, I predict several regular posters (like Mougar, Christina, Carmen, Stacey, Arches, Carnivore and myself) would be willing to take turns using the following non-lethal device against the remaining geese:
http://hackedgadgets.com/2008/01/16/disintegrator-rubber-band-gun/
I'm sure with a little effort, we could even design a way that we could control it from our computers. Thus allowing us to post here and shoot geese at the same time. ....it would approach orgasmic.
I have gotta get me one of those! -

This will also work nicely on those people who pee on buildings, bikers who come out of his lane, etc.
Oh and the Canadian geese are the ones that go "Quack Eh" -

I came up with two efficient, non-violent solutions that could be quickly implemented to preserve both geese and humans.
...it is your turn.
You can't just make fun of other's brilliant ideas.
....remember what happens if we leave this to the government "professionals" like Tupper: Needless death of geese, coupled with a denial of responsibility. -

Works for me. I'm sure I can count on you for my big break once I figure this out.
At least one of the two of us is trying. But, I have agree: My solutions so far suck. They would figure out a way to get out of the rubber band restraint, or be set free by animal activists.
Likewise, the rubber band gatling gun might suffer a similar fate.
....gasing them seems to be the only solution our government can achieve. -

It would keep the geese busy, and unproductive. ....they might become so fat they can't fly. -
FIDO needs to shut up. 400 Geese are too damn many for Prospect Park Lake, and the hundreds of off leash dogs that overrun the woods and the fields of the park each and every day are far more destructive of the environment and just as intimidating to people as the geese were if not more so.
If FIDO keeps whining and yelping about the geese being killed, maybe - just maybe - Tupper Thomas will be struck by a lightning bolt of reality and put the off leash dogs behind fences and dog runs, where they belong, so everyone else can start enjoying the park again without worrying about loose dogs. -
Whichever way you regard the situation, it is kind of bizarre that they are not also requesting that the planes no longer come in just above the tree line (okay, 2000ft, but still...) all the way 10-15 miles back into Brooklyn if there is such a huge risk demanding immediate action.
Why would whatever solution recommended not include having the planes maintain higher altitudes until they reach final approach proximity in Queens?
Is it really necessary to maintain such low altitudes a full 10 or 15 miles out?
Why not also minimize risk by mandating that aircraft must descend in stages, only reaching the last 3,000 feet or so in the last 5 miles out? (and not wait so long to ascend to at least 10,000 feet on takeoff)
Newport Beach, California (Santa Ana / SNA) airport flight controllers were made to follow a local law a number of years ago that requires planes to maintain high altitude until the last few miles to and from the airport (mainly for noise reasons).
If there really is some apocalyptic risk involved here that demands immediate and bold action, why wouldn't NY local airports be made to follow the same practice?
I often look up and smh that they appear to be on final approach to Long Meadow, not airports way out/over in Queens.
But yeah, if there's also an overpopulation problem that should be dealt with as well. -

I don't know where that count comes from, but we visited those geese many times, and I'd say there were never more than fifty or so hanging out in the main goose spot, (near the circle at PPS and Ocean). Maybe the USDA's Goose Sonderkommandos get paid by the beak? -

Just a reminder that there will be a rally at City Hall to protest the killing of the geese on Thurs. Aug. 12 at noon. Please come, and please spread the word!
-
There will also be a pro-foie gras counter-protest at that time and place, so whatever your politics, please come out on Thursday!
-

I can't make it. I'll eat a chicken sandwich instead.
