Graziella's - are we in Times Square? — Brooklynian

Graziella's - are we in Times Square?

Subject: Graziella's - are we in Times Square?

I've lived in the area for a few years now - just before Il Torchio became Graziella's. I tried it for the first time last night and was sadly overwhelmed :(

The bread in the basket was stale and the pizzas were just blah.

But what I wanted to post about was the bill - the tip was added on automatically! Has this happened to anyone else? I saw on the menu that tip is added on to parties of 6+ but we were only a party of 2. I normally tip 20% on the bill so I was a little insulted that they did this and didn't tip any more than what it said on the bill. Anyone else encounter this situation??

  • Graziella's was never Il Torchio - Graziella's is on Vanderbilt, Il Torchio was on Myrtle. Which location are you talking about. Graziella's seems like a casual place, very kid friendly. A little loud. Never had that tip thing done to my bill. Did you look/sound European? They often forget to tip since it is not the same custom there...
  • I love Graziella's on Vanderbilt.

Haven't been to Ill Torchio or whatever it's called in a long time
  • I think they suggest a tip - if you look, it generally has three numbers, 15%, 20%, and 25% or something like that, with the tip added to the total tl the side of each. I THINK. Might have been different in your case, but what I just described has happened to me.

As for the food, I love it. Their specials are fantastic, their seafood is great, and their beer and wine selections are top notch. The rooftop seating area is one of my favorites in Fort Greene. Glad they're there.
  • Oops, I must be confused! It was definitely Graziella's on Vanderbilt. We also don't look or sound European at all and it was definitely tacked on to the bill, because the total seemed a little high and when I looked closer, I saw that 18% had been added on, not a suggested tip. Then when they ran the debit card, the tip was added on already, and there was another line for add'l tip!

I really really wanted to like it. But the amount of money we paid was def. not worth it to me.
  • We LOVE Graziella's and have for years. MUCH better than Franny's and with no attitude from the people who work there nor the patrons.

Never had a tip suggested nor put on the bill
  • Did you ask them about it?
  • They have a sign that says that 18% tip will be added to bills for those seated on the roof deck/pergola whatever they call the second floor. Some other restaurants also do this in their "garden" or such.

I have a two year old which are not allowed up there, so I sit downstairs and I choose to tip 20% because they treat us so well and the food is THE best. Wine selections are awesome, too.
  • I wish I was eating their pizza right now.

That explains the 18%! Makes perfect sense. The no-kids-below-12 rule is my favorite part of the roof, I applaud Graziella's for sticking to it.
  • Ahh! I must have missed the sign. Thanks for that, b_green5! Mystery solved.
  • better than frannys?? I haven't been to frannys, but when I went to graziellas, I didn't think it was anything transcendental or anything. not necessarily times square, but maybe UWS.
