Bike stolen outside of Atlantic Center- help!

Hi everyone,
My bike was stolen earlier today, Wednesday July 28, 2010 between 2-4pm outside of the Target on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn (kryptonite cable was cut through). It is a red Vita Specialized . I bought it last year.

The bike has:
- scratches in the middle of the handlebar
- scratches on the brake/shifters lever
- small dent on the frame
- red light attached to the seat post
- missing the right toe strap

I would really appreciate it if you all could keep an eye out for the bike for me. Please email me asap if you see/hear/find anything.

Here's a picture of the bike and a link for more info:

  • Link broken; Error 404.

Sorry to hear about your bike.
  • There must be cameras up in that area. Ask the police or even the mall security.
  • I went to the 88th precinct yesterday but they told me to come back today because there was "no one" available to take my report . I will go and ask about the security cameras of the atlantic center. thanks.
  • did you learn your wire lock lesson, we learned it the hard way also....

It's bullshit like that which makes me hate the NYPD.

If your apt had been broken into, or your car stolen, would they have told you that?
  • The seat got stolen off my bike from there a few years back. I found the security office immediately and made a report- but unfortunately, the cameras weren't on aimed on the bike racks, and it would've been almost impossible to spot someone with a bike seat, since it's small. I was SOL.

Security office is located by the escalators on the ground floor- or at least that's where they were back then.

Sorry to hear about your bike- it's so violating.

Thats strange there should always be someone at a Precinct to take a report. Next time call 911 from the scene
  • I was sent to 3 different precincts last week and the last one told me to go back to the place my bike was stolen from and call 911.
Since then I've been trying to get someone on the phone to find out the information about vin etching and my report number. In the Park Slope precinct (78th) the person is "out for the next few weeks" with nobody covering, in the Fort Greene (88th) precinct they took my number down and have yet to call back.

Good luck jkita, I feel your pain.

Mod note: removed the emoticons. Note that an 8 followed by a close parens ) equals 8)
  • What's with the automatic cutifying of the precinct numbers?

You might want to check out www.bikeregistry.com - you can register and describe your bike/serial number/photo. If its stolen, you flag it as stolen on the site and the bike is added to a "hotlist" which - hopefully - a reputable bike shop or buyer will check before purchasing it. It's free to register- but you have to buy a little sticker so people know your bike is registered (for $1). They also sell very reasonably priced heavy duty chains/locks. I admit to only learning about this site yesterday, but the concept seems good (or certainly better than nothing).
  • Brooklyn Bike & Board on Vanderbilt has a stolen bike registry. You could also try calling local pawn shops and giving a description to let them know that if it comes in, it's stolen goods. Although not in NYC I had a bike returned to me after being stolen because I called the local pawn shops (disclaimer: it was a much smaller city with only 6 or 7 pawn shops.)
