Troublesome schoolkids coming to Park Place Underhill?
There is a rumor that the big Board of Ed building at the corner of Park Pl. & Underhill is going to start having "incorrigible" kids — too unmanageable for regular NYC schools — attending classes starting September. Has anyone else heard this? The last time this was tried (according to the same rumor-spreader), the students were unruly, obnoxious, and made life pretty unpleasant for those in the vicinity.
There are a lot of new parents in this area, the playground around the corner is very popular, and the overall upscaling has really changed the tone around here. If true, the Board of Ed trying to quietly bring in a population that they have trouble handling might be disturbing and objectionable for the well-heeled new families who are sinking a lot of $ into their revovations.

wow...this is a very....ummm....loaded question.
I am not sure what you mean by "incorrigible"
...are they allowing special education students from district 75 to attend their least restrictive environment and maybe the school wasn't prepared and it didn't go well?
...are they allowing students from lower socio-economic backgrounds to attend the school and maybe the students didn't have the social help to adjust or the parental/family support to succeed and so they acted out to feel successful in something other than academics or behavior?
...are they emotionally disturbed students from specialized schools that they are trying to integrate into a less restricted educational environment?
I really don't know what you mean by "too unmanageable for regular NYC schools". But for any kid coming into this school and to have this label and expectation put on them by all other adults in the area who will judge them as such I feel really bad for.
I know that parents must look out for this own child first and foremost ALWAYS but a school is a community and all students should be supported by all parents and teachers equally - regardless of what rumor is going around.
Until you know who these kids are and why they are moving to your school, I really don't know what type of kids are showing up. In the NYC DOE defense, if they are kids who have been shown to have actual problems (emotional, learning, etc.) they generally come with either additional paraprofessionals or at least supportive money and materials from their last placement. -
It sounds like it may be one of the "suspension" schools. Students who are suspended from school are still required to attend a daily class. Usually they are sent to another district school maybe they are creating one central area for these students.
-
hmm...We get suspended kids from the same district all the time but it isn't a permanent thing -- more like 1 to 5 weeks where they have to be in a different learning environment.

Sorry that was what I meant - temporary students. -
Cut-off from their friends and far from their own neighborhoods, kids who are sent to suspension school typically keep a low profile if they attend at all. You will notice zero change in the pscyho-emotional tenor of your children's "safe" spaces and if you take our advice, in the corresponding space in your own psyche.

Which building are you talking about? I believe the board of ed owned building on Park at Underhill is all offices. How would they be getting kids? Or do you mean a school nearby?
It would be helpful if you cited where you were hearing these "rumors" or if you read it somewhere, etc. Your posting is really vague... -
The building on Park and Underhill in front of the playground on Underhill is not a school. It is a former school building that currently houses District 13 offices. If students are being moved there, it will not impact other students, except perhaps from the perspective of these kids being in the neighborhood with other kids before and after school.

"I am not sure what you mean by "incorrigible"
i think this means kids 15-18 who are walking down the middle of Washington Ave 3 in the afternoon, throwing punches at one another and showing total disregard for oncoming traffic.
pretending that there is not a problem is the worst kind of reaction. -
The rumor is, that classes will be held in that office building on the corner. I don't know what "incorrigible" means either, but the person who told me this is pretty knowledgeable about what goes on on the block and has worked for the board of ed in the past. He remembers when that building held classes in the past and the kids were hanging out, smoking and (literally) screwing around on nearby stoops.
This is why I wanted to see if anyone else knew about it. I take what this guy says with more than a grain of salt. -

Teenagers who are completely self-absorbed are not incorrigible, they are normal. Incorrigible kids are the ones who are shooting at other kids off the rooftops.

Before everyone starts clutching the pearls, there needs to be a lot more information given. What are the ages of these kids (elementary vs. JHS vs. HS), how many kids, where are they coming from (borough wide vs D13), etc. -

You had me until here. Of course, well-heeled families who have a lot of money to spend NEVER have obnoxious kids. Oh no.
More importantly, could you confirm this rumor before spreading it? Why are you posting here? Can't you call the DOE or Tish James's office? -
I heard that it is to become a temporary site for a new charter school focusing on "medicine". About 80 children. It will still be used as an administrative building.
-
Maybe Yowzer is suggesting DOE set up a space next to the pink houses in East New York for these children?

Check out the description from DOE site. -
sounds pretty innocuous...

Much less worrisome than "incorrigible"
