  • I do... no issues, although I'm not sure about how well (if?!) it works in the event of a blackout - I'm pretty sure that they mention it on their website, though...

We have it and it has been great until recently. Calls not coming through and if they do it connects poorly. Probably need a new modem.

And, it needs power to work. So no power=no phone (even 911)

Its actualy a pretty good deal - but, like cale TV service, it can go down. Verizon is more stable but the price of the optvoice (and unlimited calls) is sweet.
  • i did find this on their website re: a backup power solution ($45, i don't know how long it would last you.. i'm sure it would depend):

"A back-up battery can be connected to your Optimum Voice cable modem to provide standby power during a power outage. The battery replaces your modem's existing power cord and easily connects between the modem and the wall outlet."

    http://www.optimumvoice.com/index.jhtml?pageType=battery

i haven't had any power outages (knock on wood) but i'd still probably get this.
  • Oh, I don't know what kind of features Verizon offers, but I do have to say that I like the OV options - you can forward calls to multiple numbers, receive text messages when you get a voice mail, turn anonymous calling on and off at any time, etc, etc.

and its all included in the falt fee!! :D
  • We have used OV fro the last two years.
I guess we get what we paid for, the connections are pretty bad constantly and you will lose service most of the time momentarily and seldom for over an hour.
    Customer service varies.
We put up with it because of the significant savings compared to Verizon and becasue we have the cel. as back up.
  • thanks everyone. we went ahead and ordered it. even if it works half the time, it's half the price. we have regular verizon lines for work so we can always use those in a pinch. i hate being tethered to a cell.
  • Go for Vonage. It is a lot cheaper! I have been using it for about a year. If you get someone to recommend you, then you and that current customer can get a month free. They have good international deals also.
You just need a high speed internet service.

    www.vonage.com
  • I have it. It is ok. I got the package deal.. Phone, internet and cable. We have had some problems with the cable but other than that it is allright.
  • i've been thinking of doing vonage, because my unlimited, tons of features, flate-rate-no-matter-how-many-calls-you-make $39 plan from verizon ends up being SIXTY dollars after taxes/tariffs.

are there taxes, etc., on the internet phone services?
  • The big phone lobbyists (verizon) have been trying to impose taxes on the vonage phone system. They have done it in a few states but it hasn't hit New York yet. I specifically chose vonage to get out of the wrath of verizon. They suck. Dialtone charge, touchtone charge, etc...etc... common that is exploitation. I went with cablevision for high speed internet and got vonage.

I can get you hooked up and we both get a free month. There have been no problems and you can work it out to keep your old number. i use them for the 14.99 deal where i have a landline for convenience.
