Where to buy furniture? — Brooklynian

Where to buy furniture?

Bonjour everyone!

I am moving to Park Slope this month (I just graduated from college) and I was curious where all the good places to find furniture are?

I'm looking for basics; bed, mattress, computer desk, dresser, etc.

I'm 22 and an artist, so i really love the artsy/vintage vibe (as well as the cheap, used vibe, haha.) Any suggestions of cool shops or markets I should go too?

(and also all suggestions of restaurants and shops I should check out are greatly appreciated.)

Park Slope reminds me a lot of where I went to school (Savannah, GA) So I am so super excited to live here!

Thanks so much!

  • me i usually buy from chinese or arab immigrant places, they generally haggle with you and bring cash :p.
  • you can check out brooklyn flea in fort greene park. Junk in Williamsburg, Housing Works locations in Manhattan. And i've had really good luck furnishing my apartments with craigslist finds.
  • Your best bang for buck will almost undoubtedly be Craigslist. Salvation Army on Atlantic also gets a lot of furniture at reasonable prices. And of course there's always Ikea in Red Hook. Funky/cool/retro/hip stuff will cost more at any of the boutique shops around town - but one of my favorites is Trailer Park on Sterling Place and 6th Ave. Bon chance.
  • As for food and cafes etc... spend an hour browsing and doing a search on this board. There are huge threads on everything from best bars to best pizza etc.. you'll find all your answers by searching and catching up on this forum.

For furniture, first of all do a search on "bed bugs" --- read everything, and take note. It a very real danger and because of that don't just take any old sofa/dresser/bed frame from used stores or craigslist. Almost all my furniture is Mid-century and Art Deco, but when it came to my bed/mattress/sofa/pillows I made sure I bought it new.

On 5th ave is a Sleepy's bed store and at the Atlantic Center (Atlantic center has many stores- look it up, plus it is our major Subway station that will get you anywhere).

An Ikea bus is free and takes you to Red Hook to buy inexpensive pots/pans/chairs/desks/furniture.

7th ave by 1st also has a Vintage Fair on the weekends. Plus 7th ave has some furniture stores, wine shops, kitchen supplies...

Atlantic ave towards Carroll Gardens/Brooklyn Heights has a string of Antique Stores (plus great Middle Eastern food).

None of these places really have a website, except for the mega stores (Ikea/Sleepy's/Target/PC Richard & Sons <-- electronics & Radio Shack) so a day of walking around and noting what you like is the only way to go.
  • Warning: No matter how long you live here you will never find a bar as awesome as Pinky Masters.
  • thanks for all of the suggestions! i am going to check all of them out!

and anthonycm- i already expected not to find anything better than pink masters, haha, thanks.
  • Dumpster diving is also an art form here in Brooklyn. Check out which days are bulk days and take a walk around the neighborhood - you would be amazed as what people throw away. Congratulations on your graduation and welcome to Brooklyn.

yeah, but that art form needs to turn to science in the days of bed bugs...
  • Cheap, non-bed bugs = IKEA.
  • I am gonna pm you now
  • Time Galleries on 5th Ave. between 15th and 16th St (next to Sidecar). The owner goes to estate sales and then resells the furniture, refinishing items when necessary. It might be more expensive than Ikea, but you'll be buying actual wood and not MDF/particleboard.
  • Another option is Freecycle
You join a Yahoo group and then you get messages from people in the local area who are giving things away; or you can post looking for something specific
