Q Train Experience

I learned something new about the Q train recently - it may happen on other trains that go over the bridge too.

When we hit Dekalb, a couple of workers got on, carrying some equipment and wearing those orange reflective vests. I was in the first car, so I watched them get on and go into the driver's compartment and close the door. Halfway across the bridge, the train stops, and they step off the front of the train and go off to the right. The driver announced something indecipherable (as normal), and continued. Who knew?

Huh. I guess that I had always assumed that they were pausing for traffic at Canal.

i wish i knew more about all this mysterious track work they're always doing.

sometimes i get naive and think one day they're going to unveil the fastest most efficient subway in the world.

It's the Manny B itself. It's an old bridge , one of the first built from iron and is prone to movements and shifting on all axis' from winds and especially the autotraffic and subways. For awhile, if I remember correctly, the subways were riding on one side of the bridge causing some an inbalance of weight. With all this going on the MTA (along with City Bridge inspectors/engineers)is constantly maintaining the tracks and checking the bridge for wear and tear. It's easier for the workers to be dropped of quickly rather than enter through Dekalb or Canal Streets and having too walk the 1/2 mile or so.
