Subject: One stop shopping area -Woman's Clothing?

OK, I need to buy an work outfit. I HATE crowded malls and stores. But I have to do it, so I want to get it done without having to take multiple trips all over manhattan to find the right outfit.

Where is the best street/avenue/location to hit a bunch of women's clothing stores in one stop? Broadway? I don't want teen/girly stores. No Forever 21 and trendy shops.

Any help would be great!

  • How did you know I was going into the fetish industry? Though I prefer my maids uniforms in leather.

    Sorry about your plant though.
  • congrats on getting an interview!
  • Yes, congrats!

The mall isn't so crowded if you go early in the morning.
  • This is bad if you don't like crowds, but 34th street between 5th ave and 6th ave/ Broadway in Manhattan.
Head west on 34th, north side of the street, and hit Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, and finish at Macy's. At Macy's check the second floor, you might find something in Kenneth Cole Reaction and whatever brands they show in that immediate area, then go up to the 3rd ? or 4th ? floor - whichever one has Donna Karan / Michael Kors. Macy's gets less and less crowded each floor you go up.

This strategy is intense, but I think you get whatever you need in one trip this way.
  • How about Broadway around Prince, Spring and Broome.

They have H&M, Zara, Club Monaco, Banana Republic etc.

Probably have a lot of their Spring/Summer stuff marked way down at this point, perfect timing for your interview in the dead of Summer.

    Congradgies, btw. :P
  • I'd go to 5th Ave. near Union Square. They have Banana Republic and an Ann Taylor, both good for interview stuff. Not as many choices as Soho, but you can always stop there on the way home if you strike out. Also, I concur with going early. It doesn't take much to get out earlier than the crowd on the weekend. Good luck!
  • Century21. You can go to the one in Bay Ridge and hit bliss at Grand Sichuan after.
Alternately, cosign on the Macy's strategy, or any of those Banana/AnnTaylor strips, like 5th Ave Chelsea.

Congrats and fingers crossed for you!
  • Second Century21.
  • I am a Century 21 junkie and they do have a nice selection of suits for reasonable prices. But for the same prices as Century 21 Syms on Church St. in Manhattan has a larger selection and if I am not mistaken they do the alterations there for a small price.
  • You can also try 5th Avenue in the city from 14th to 23rd Street. Ann Taylor, GAP, Daffy's, H&M, Victoria's Secret and a bunch of smaller clothing boutiques and shoe stores.

Your other option if you are working on a budget is Loehman's on 7th Ave and 18th (17th?) Streets in the city.
  • There's a mall across the street from the Newport/Pavonia (?) Path station. Look it up to see if you like the store options--it's a trek but so quiet and easy to shop there. I have done this in the same situation a while back. It has some chain stores with pretty standard stuff plus a food court :) I just took Path from downtown Manhattan.

I googled it to make sure I was remembering the right stop:

Cross the street and go up the escalator and across the breezeway to the mall. It's easier than it sounds. I learned it from friends who lived there and cut through the mall to get to the Path station.
  • I'm with Stacey. Century 21 or Syms will be a much better deal than department stores.

Have you been to the women's dept. at C21? It's huge and hard to find what you're looking for, like at many big stores like that. Plus, I've only found deals on winter coats there. I am bad at shopping in crowded stores, though, so C21 is like a personal hell to me :)

Stores like New York and Co. or Express often have interview/office appropriate outfits on sale. One or both are in the NJ mall and I think both are near each other in one or two spots in the city.
  • OQ - You MUST try Syms. Its is a large spacious store and is NEVER crowded. They have such a large selection of women's suits and their coat selection puts C21 to shame. They also have a large selection of evening wear.

As a curvy woman I find that Express does not fit me properly plus their skirts are much too short for me at this point in my life ;)
NY & Co. has become a little more business casual for me but their I do shop their often because the clothes are a perfect fit for my size.

Also just and FYI there is a small little chain of stores called DeJanerio in downtown Manhattan that is similar to Marshalls and C21 where they buy the name brands and sell them for less. They carry alot of Express and NY&Co.

Also on Nassau St. there are 2 small little dress stores that sell suits for a flat price of 59.99

Sorry guys I just get carried away when talking about shopping :)
  • FYI, stacey is the only one I know who tips the workers at Century 21.
  • Thanks for the info Stacey! I hope to never need a suit! So far I've only had to dress up for interviews, so nice slacks and a jacket have been sufficient but I have gotten some great deals on pants (that still look good years and many washes later) at NY & Co.

Some of the people I want to work for now have my hopes high on casual work environments--when the leaders of the org.'s go out and speak, they don't dress up either :) I heart science.
