Cat Trap and Release services

So last summer the neighborhood cat, who likes to hang out in our backyard, had kittens. One of those kittens has now had her own kitten (at least one that I've seen). I'd like to end the cycle, but I have cats of my own and cannot take her in even for a short time.

I know there are services that deal with this, but I haven't been able to find one that doesn't require forstering the cat yourself. I am willing to trap her myself and cover the cost of the surgery.

In addition, the little kitten is just adorable. It looks to be about 3-4 months. I may be able to find it a home, but again, I cannot take it into my home even for a short period.

I have called my vet and another vet. Both will spay and board, but only with an appointment, and I can't guarantee that I will be able to catch her just before the appointment.

Can anyone offer advice or organizations to contact?

  • what neighborhood are you in?
  • Sorry, that might help huh?

    Greenwood Heights
  • I’d say trap the cat and bring him/her to an ASPCA truck that claims they will fix the cat for “free.” Here’s the August schedule for that truck:
    http://www.aspca.org/aspca-nyc/mobileclinic/?evborough=brooklyn&borough=brooklyn#calendar2

But be warned of the following rules:

    1. You must show up there before 7 in the morning.
    2. They only fix two cats per person.
    3. They claim to do the spaying & neutering for “free” but that’s only if you give them a $99 donation (getting two cats fixed for $99 is still better than anything you’ll get at a vet - I just wish they were honest instead of claiming it's “free” when it’s clearly not).
  • It's only free to people who are on some form of public assistance, everyone else has to pay.

Lemur, I think you'll find it difficult to find a trustworthy person to TNR this cat if you can't bring the cat inside at all. A recovery space is essential, hard to find most of the time, and not free. Also, you say you'll pay for the surgery but what about paying the person for their time and transportation? As for trapping the cat, do you have any experience doing that and do you have a trap? What will happen with the kitten? Where is it going to go while you find a home for it? Many of us already have enough cats and kittens we're trying to find homes for and cannot take in anymore.

I think it's extremely kind of you to want to trap the cat and find a home for the kitten. But I don't think you realize what you're asking trappers to do. Feel free to PM me or ask any other questions here. I don't want to discourage you, I just want to help you understand everything that a project like this involves.
