On Fifth Ave between 9th and 10th St there's basic sheet cakes etc. If I was looking for something more upscale, I'd call Little Buddy Biscuit, more towards 20th St on Fifth Ave.

Just have to weigh in here that the vanilla buttercream sheet cakes at Costco are AWESOME. DEEEE-LICIOUS. No joke.
And not expensive, extremely well priced. :-k
Call me nuts, but I stand completely by that. -
^ Jeffrey's right. Those Costco cakes are really good and affordable. Plus they design and write on your cake for free. The cheesecake icing is pretty damn good too.

Lady Bird Bakery on 8th ave between 11th and 12th is really good.

little buddy biscuit company's
specialty cakes are the awesome -
Fairway is not in PS but many people do shop there and the cakes are great and can be pre-ordered or for a small one just bought and you can add the name if you want. The prices are reasonable and the cakes there are fine. We have hosted some BIG parties in the last years and I will just get 3 cakes and put candles on one rather than spending $125 for a cake large enough to serve 50-60 people at... (you name the place and there are many)

Two votes for Ladybird on 8th ave and about 13th street. love their brooklyn black out layer cake, cakes are pretty and they write on them.

Maybe too far from you but Betty On Atlantic ( think its between 3rd and Nevins ) do beautiful custom cakes.

Made In Heaven Cakes on 3rd Ave between 12th and 13th Streets. Madeinheavencakes(dot)com. These guys are talented and can do cakes in the shape of pretty much anything without losing quality in taste. My fave is the chocolate coating with yellow cake and raspberry filling! They are in a weird location though on the second floor of an industrial type building above that Gowanus beer hall place...

Thanks everyone! I got a cake at Ladybird and it was really, really good. I was hesitant because I have had their cookies and thought they were very average, but the cake was awesome.

Agreed on Costco! I bought a Red Velvet cake for a big party - it served around 30 people and there were lots of raves!
And since we're not sticking to the Slope, don't forget Baked on Van Brunt in Red Hook. This is one of my favorite bakeries anywhere. They make gorgeous and delicious cakes with real buttercream frosting to die for.
