  • I think the Tea Party lost its focus when they strayed from their key issue of lowering the national debt.

....If they had stayed with this issue, people like me would seriously consider them.

We are living way beyond our means, and servicing our debt will soon begin to eat up a sizable chunk of our GDP.

I'm all for a smaller government, but lets make the cuts in a way that enhances our competitiveness on a world scale. Let's embrace free trade, and finally go through the hard adjustments that it will take.

The isolationist vs imperialist pendulum that the US seems to embrace doesn't work for me. Let's be good at something, and then have people come to us.

No comparison but you knew that. President Obama has racked up more debt in his short time than Bush in 8 years. Where is that 8% unemployment we were promised?

"Yes, I want to antagonize these douchebags." Amuse is more like it.

    eggcream has a point here.

This would be as amusing and fulfilling to Tea Partiers as the Westboro Baptist Church protesters were to the larger Park Slope -area community.

    Correction:

Republicans racked up so much debt coming out of the Clinton surplus era and screwed up financial oversight and monetary policy so much that it took even more for Obama to dig everything out of utter collapse and freefall, to the point of where we are just now seeing stability again.

Obama may have a lot of problems and leave plenty of room for criticism, but this is hardly an area where Republican leadership has any standing or credibility to criticize.

Yes, we are a nation that is living beyond its means.

....many nations have it far worse.

    We have two choices:
We can continue to live beyond our means until we become competitive or are longer able to pay off our debt.

    OR

We can cut our spending and lower our standard of living to match our output.

....Unemployment is something that we will have for decades to come. We are no longer the world's undisputed leader, and nations can choose to take their business elsewhere. It is something we will have to get used to.

....the past is over. It's all about Marco Economics, and the balance of accounts.

Wrong. Some are only for small government until they're woken out of their ignorant little worlds:

And nearly three-quarters of those who favor smaller government said they would prefer it even if it meant spending on domestic programs would be cut.

But in follow-up interviews, Tea Party supporters said they did not want to cut Medicare or Social Security — the biggest domestic programs, suggesting instead a focus on “waste.”

Some defended being on Social Security while fighting big government by saying that since they had paid into the system, they deserved the benefits.

Others could not explain the contradiction.

“That’s a conundrum, isn’t it?” asked Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif. “I don’t know what to say. Maybe I don’t want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security.” She added, “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

Record unemployment, Food Stamps hit record high, gov't healthcare shoved down our throats. People are pissed, even those that aren't white, male, chrisitian, Republican-voting group.
Perhaps true, and still President Obama would wipe the floor with half-term governor Sarah Palin. Sad commentary on the insignificant position of tea partiers.

Oh eggcream, why must you dishonestly interpret my points? Can't you refute what I actually say, not what you wish I said?

I didn't say there weren't blacks or non-chrisitians in the Tea Party, I just said they were far from the majority, which is 100% accurate. The Tea Party is a predominantly, white, male, Christian and republican movement.

    Sorry friend.

    Edit:

    Here are some fun numbers:

    59% male

    75% are 45+ y.o.

    89% white

63% are always or usually Republican

    73% consider themselves 'conservative'

    87% are Christian.

So, burning the Confederate flag isn't about regionalism - on my side, at least. Its about race-based oppression, and those that still embrace it, i.e. Andrew Breitbart, the guy who posted the heavily-edited video of Shirley Sherrod's speach (as I mentioned in my previous post). It's not an accident that the "Teaparty" was embraced by FOX News - FOX News is headed by Roger Ailes, who previously worked for the elder Bush as his media and was responsible for writing and producing the "Revolving Door" ad during the 1988 Presidential campaign

    pwaltman,

My issue with the event has to do with its perception by the "other side". I agree with you that the confederate flag is a complicated symbol, that can contain "racism". However, for many people in this country (particularly the demographic that supports the Tea Party), the confederate flag is *primarily* about regionalism. This event conjures up all of the historical resentment between the "North" and the "South," even if the organizers' intent was not that.

Unlike many NYers, I actually find the Tea Party to be a legitimate threat, not a joke. I supported the NAACP when it called the Tea Party out for its racism. I think that Tea Party leaders and their media supporters are playing the "racist" card to exploit feelings of economic powerlessness of whites, without offering real solutions to our country's economic problems. It's insulting. For that reason, I would hate to see the energy and momentum behind this event wasted on reviving a divided America, when really the protest should be about unifying to speak out against using such unsavory techniques.

In any case, thanks for your careful response. I was curious about your thinking.
  • The one danger the Left constantly falls into is that every right-wing group, or groups who are anti-left, such as militias, ares made up of mostly white bigots. There are quite a few if not many ethnic and sexual backgrounds who make up these groups. Hispanics, black, Asian, gays & lesbians, you name it. The common binders being lower taxes and less government. Remember, George W. probably had the most integrated cabinet in White House history. My opinion being that the requirement was a belief in a Higher Authority. But, this argument is for another time.

And if you want to burn a symbol of racism then burn a Klan hood or a symbolic shackle which was used to keep slaves in check back in pre-1820's Brooklyn.
