Right. Rather than semantics, we should concentrate on grammar.
I propose: "Eugenics WAS mentioned" under the principle of notional agreement, whereby it (a practice) WAS mentioned as a singular concept, even if superficially it resembles a plural.

I tend to think that if the guy was making a racial slur - which it sounds like he definitly was - then it's fair to say his comments were racist. Following this logic, it would then be suitable to say that he therefore was acting as a racist ass. I don't know - makes sense to me - but then again armchair was starting to make sense too.

I think there's been a lot of overreaction here. LiveToTravel never defended racism. In fact, all he said is that it's the wrong word to use.

I personally don't care about that - either way, it's in common usage, and I think the semantics discussion takes away from the main point - one of our friends on this board got hassled by a dick in the nabe. But tuning around and attacking him for "defending" racism is beyond ridiculous. His post was useless, not racist.

In addition, no one's mentioned that this was also a homophobic slur, and assuming that black guy was straight, he is thus part of the "institutionalized hegemonic majority" as a straight guy.

I am curious if this guy from St. Mark's ever goes to the Stop&Shop on Beverly and Bedford...

My wife, 1.5 year old daughter, and I were shopping there just before Xmas '04, and a guy meeting the general description shoved his cart by us (slightly bashing our cart, carrying said child), muttering, "god damn crackers..." Next aisle, same thing, only this time he was a little more profane.

The third aisle, I said, "And a merry christmas to you, too sir", stood aside, and let him push on. The muttering ceased.

he wasn't crazy, ie someone who looked prone to muttering to himself. I think he was merely provoked by the sight of 3 white people...if that's not racism, I don't know what else to call it.

awww! WhyFi! I think your St. Marks racist&homophobe has an older, white uncle in Vegas! I was just at the Wynn playing poker and my dealer, a really nice Asian woman, got the following:

dealer: "sir, please post your big blind"

older white guy: "what? I can't understand you Chinese people."

dealer (really loud): "SIR, PLEASE POST YOUR BIG BLIND!"

older white guy: "why is she yelling at me? bitch. probably a lesbian. Chinese lesbian."

he finally left the table. ah.

I think there just aren't any good asian slurs anymore. So you have to append something that carries some power, like "faggot". Which reminds me of one of my favorite "Best of Craiglist" posts:

Dumb question -- can't you simply set a filter in your email program? I've done the same with more innocent, yet persistent, emailers that didn't respond. While it granted doesn't stop them from emailing you, it does stop you from reading it.

And on a serious note: can you PM me with a copy of one of these emails, if you have the stomach for it, and some of the details? A friend of mine is a sort of freelance political pundit and would be interested in this information, I believe. (He also is a journalist for a business publication dealing with direct marketing, so he could be interested in this on a few levels.)
