Yo i need a cheap vacation — Brooklynian

Yo i need a cheap vacation

Ok so the sig other and I need a vaca. We are not picky about place or time (although within the next 6 months if preferable)
We are broke.

Qualifications, in order of importance:
1. WARM BEACH (meaning somewhere to lay on sand and swim)
2. CHEAP (a very close second)
3. Relatively easy by NYC air (not 3 connecting flights)

Of less importance
4. Accommodations- something reasonably clean but doesn't need to have a spa or any of that shit
6. Attractions- dont need to see too much. Mostly just laying around and not being in nyc
7. Partying- he doesn't drink. I do, but not to the point of Vegas-like frivolity (is that a word?) Somewhere like Miami may not be a good fit.

Really, we just want to lay on a beach somewhere and not have a bedbug or roach infested room, or be fearful for our safety. Beyond that...there's not much else we're looking for.

HALP. We are so broke and SO SICK OF BEING IN NYC RIGHT NOW. Anytime between now and christmas would be amazing....

  • Drive up to the Adirondack Mountains. There are numerous beautiful lakes, many with beaches. Cottage rentals are extremely cheap by NYC standards. In addition to drinking and swimming, there are hiking, biking, canoeing and some sightseeing.

Or go a little further, to the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence river between the US and Canada, due north of Syracuse.
  • ^is that not going to be cold? we're thinking more tropical maybe?

however, the prospect of stealing a family members car and driving is appealing...
  • Believe it or not my husband and I spent a night at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City and loved it, we are going back for two nights next week. The room on the internet is 102.00 a night. When you join their membership club (free) you get 1/2 price on dinner and other sundry things. Wonderful adult pool ( only over 21) free shuttles to the Beach which is one of the cleanest on the east coast and free, You don't have to gamble at all. The bus down is super cheap and some places even give you 25.00 to go. We had fun and it came to about 200.
  • Go to a beach town once school is back in session. The rates are cheaper AND there are no families (um, not that I dislike families)
  • Not if you go in August. According to weather.com, temperatures right now vary between 50 (night) and 77 (day) degrees.
  • iceland? no beaches but there are hot springs. it's close and cheap.
  • I LOVE iceland (I've been there twice) but the accommodations are generally not that cheap, and its not exactly sandy beaches on which to tan upon.
  • Try Freeport, Bahamas. You can get direct flights or flights with one connection. Lots of time shares that rent out by the week and a couple of big hotel chains. Its definitely more of a chilling vibe. Took a quick look on Expedia and you can get airfare and hotel for 5 days/4 nights for anywhere from $500-$600 per person.
  • I'd imagine any place on the Alabama or Mississippi coast would be dirt cheap between now and 2012. I can't imagine any of the rooms being flea-bag since the tourism is so desperately needed.
  • Not sure what 'cheap' means to you, but I vote:

Negril, Jamaica. One of my favorite places on earth. We did 4days/3nights, flight and hotel for $500.

And we didn't stay in a sterile resort. We just stayed in a clean, low key hotel with a beach front bar (as every hotel/bar is in Negril) and a deck over looking the ocean.

Direct flights from JFK. Don't remember how long the flight was but I think like 2-3 hours.

One of my favorite vacations ever.

Never used it myself, but it has all inclusive deals with flights for relatively few $$$
