in other news they trust in imaginary guy up in the sky more than in sci.For the 24.5 million Americans who told the Census Bureau in 2007 that they spoke English less than "very well," it may not be their imagination that people don't take what they say quite as seriously as they do native English speakers. Researchers in Chicago have shown that people with a noticeable accent are considered less credible than those with no accent.
The stronger the accent, the less credible the speaker.
The researchers asked Americans to listen to native and non-native speakers of English making simple statements such as "A giraffe can go without water longer than a camel can," and then judge how truthful they were.
To guard against simple prejudice, the listeners were told the information came from a prepared script and wasn't based on the speaker's own knowledge.
Even so, on a scale where 10 was most truthful, native English speakers got a score of 7.5, people with mild accents a score of 6.95 and people with heavy accents a score of 6.84.
The paper is in the current issue of theJournal of Experimental Social Psychology.

...except British accents.
Have a look at how many times you see someone trying to sell something to you, be that either luxury goods or auto insurance or infomercial / direct response.
Americans view British accents (not including Cockney) as more sophisticated and dignified.
Heck...people in classic period films (like Joaquin Phoenix, playing emperor in Gladiator) fake British accents not only because of our rugged, frontier breakaway from the gilded British Empire but also as a result of our sizable Shakespearean hangover, especially when they find themselves surrounded by a gaggle of British actors in those films coming from Shakespearean theater backgrounds on stage or on British television. -

for American public
. In a few more decades the stupid will out breed the smart. -
Yes! The Corinthian leather bit was a household gem for soooo long.
On that note, "Stay thirsty my friends".
^ That is, however, a very mild accent. -
Within the US, Northerners don't feel Southerners are very smart.
...and vis versa.
So I'd change the title to "No one thinks anyone is credible but themselves" -
whynot is right. my guess is that if you conducted this experiment in any country, asking native speakers to listen to non-native speakers, you would see the same results. humans are tribal creatures, and they are frequently xenophobic to some degree. it can lead to unfortunate consequences, but americans aren't unique in this regard.

I agree with jeffrey about Americans love other English accents. it should be noted foreign non English accents is the problem.
-
but people hate american english accents all over the world. this is the really important part that you seem to be missing entirely.
-
Just like everyone's child is above average, everyone believes they have no accent.
...others do. -
Yeah, this drives me nuts. My super was an engineer in Russia and people treat him like he's an idiot.
I see this all the time, but not just with accents, with nationality too. That doctor over in Italy writing a paper on some new drug treatment? He's not credible.
However, I agree with Whynot & brokechick, this is about anyone that's not part of your tribe. -
and people think that overweight people are stupid. there's xenophobia and distrust everywhere. people act like a bunch of robots.
