Tied of paying 4 cable - what other options are out there ?

I dont really need cable. I need fast internet service and I would like to have cnn . Is there a way to do have fast internet and cnn but not pay insane sums per month ???

  • I canceled my cable a few months ago, but kept the internet. I actually had the same fear of losing CNN, but after a couple weeks I didn't miss it anymore.

To replace cable, you can get netflix and use an internet device like a ROKU or any of the new Blu-ray players (which is the same cost of 1-2 months of cable) and get plenty of movies, if that is your thing.

There are also devices where you can hook a computer in your house to your TV - but I mainly use a long HDMI cable. With that you can watch Hulu and also podcast lots of the CNN shows.

If you get a UHF/VHF antenna you can catch pretty much all the local channels - NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, etc. They broadcast over the air in HD so you won't be losing any quality playing on the TV.

At first I thought I was going to really miss cable, but it really hasn't fazed me at all and I enjoy the extra $100 each month.
  • I haven't had cable in over a year. Great move. Just go to CNN.com
  • My brother told me that Verizon and Virgin have pay-as-you-go wireless modems that work well, but the cost is determined based on the amount of MB and Gigabyte usage. The costs are a little less than Cable. I am in the same boat. I only have an internet connection, but it pains me to have to pay a disproportionate amount for even that.

I think a solution is to have one person get cable and others around that person chip in to get the most powerful wireless router they can collectively afford. Mount that thing somewhere where all can have access to it, and everyone pay that guy to maintain the connection. I don't think this is illegal, but I haven't read the fine print to verify that.
  • I just use hulu for my tv needs. do you really need CNN? you can always do cnn.com...
