2 no parking days/week vs. other areas' 1/week
Subject: 2 "no parking" days/week vs. other areas' 1/week
I recently noticed that when parking in Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and Carrol Gardens there are signs that point out "No Parking" usually only ONE day a week (for sweeping). On my block and for most of my area here in Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy the signs are usually "No Parking Monday & Wednesday" or "No Parking Tues & Thurs". This makes it twice as difficult to find finding parking on these days. Does anyone know why this area requires 2 days of sweeping while other areas only get 1?Comments

The city uses a complicated system of tracking how dirty the streets are and then determines how many days per week the streets are swept. Somewhere on this board is an earlier thread about this. But to make a long story short, our area will probably be on a 4 day a week schedule for a long time to come.

Also, for those of us living in the hood' there is the belief that it is a C-O-N-spiracy by the man to make poor people pay expensive parking tickets.
After all, do your streets get swept every alternate side day? -

It's not about making poor people pay expensive parking tickets, it's about making everyone pay expensive parking tickets.

People seem to think that the purpose of alternate side of the street parking is to keep the streets clean. In reality we know know that it is about the revenue generated and little more. More days of "cleaning" means more days to give tickets and thus more revenue. This is the reason why it is so difficult to get it reduced to 1 day a week from two.
Those neighborhoods where it has been reduced to 1 are a result of extensive efforts on the part of the locals to fight for it and even then the city has tried to revoke it. There was a recent fight in Park Slope about this because the city wanted to go back to 2 days a week, even though the streets are cleaner now with 1 day than they were when there were 2. The residents had to fight once again to keep it at one day.
Funny how the city was fighting for the opportunity to run a sweeper more than the residents requested. The only reason why is that street cleaning is a revenue generating task. -

have there been any successful attempts to fight the city about it? -

Park slope was successful. As I understand it, the basic argument was that the streets were cleaner than they had been due to more trash bins on 7th ave and residents picking up more. There were studies done that showed that the streets had gotten cleaner and that helped them to get a 'test' of 1 day per week rather than 2.
From what I understand, the 1 day per week is still temporary and has been for years now. That prompted the Dept. of Sanitation to try to end the test and once again the community showed that the streets are even cleaner now with 1 day than they were with 2.
Best place to start is your commuity board and local councilman/woman. I think the key is that the streets really do need to be cleaner, you can't just do it because people don't want to move their car twice a week.
And be prepared for a long fight, the city won't give up this revenue easily! -
How about that, for whatever reasons, the streets in Clinton Hill are dirtier than streets in Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights etc?

I reflexively disbelieve any and all conspiracy theories. However, this one actually smells like there's at least a partial truth to it. If so, typical city govt shenanigans--very annoying. -
Get the morons who traipse around my immediate vicinity in Ft Greene to stop tossing:
-chicken bones
-plastic "juice" bottles (0% juice)
-doritos packets
-fritos packets
-mcdonalds bags
and perhaps the city would consider 1 day a week
until then, 2 days of cleaning are it -

2 high schools -- tech & loughlin, likely other schools as well
I've seen grown men and women throw stuff on the street with a garbage can 12 feet away. The lack of accountability is more than just kids -
