PM Christina (regular poster) or try the Brooklyn dog house

Dog Abbey in Red Hook. My friend just sent her dog there for 2 weeks and has been raving.
Christina may be out of town? -
Correct. Nix Christina idea

As a serious dog lover, and more importantly a former employee for some of the most prestigious doggy daycares in Manhattan (serving numerous celebs).... I will beg of you with all of my heart, DO NOT BOARD YOUR DOG, PLEASE!
I am not here to badmouth businesses, and obviously I have not been in all of these places. Just basing this on spending 2 years in a couple very upscale places in very demanding neighborhoods... I can only imagine how bad it gets elsewhere.
a short list of things i've seen:
-Dog FIghts (that's a given)
-Ear lost in dog fight
-Dogs lying in poo, pee, bleach, and other cleaning supplies
-Dogs not getting medication
-Dogs having no access to water
-Dogs losing and gaining HUGE amounts of weight because of ignored feeding instruction or special food requirements
-Dogs escaping out the front door and being killed by car
-Dogs being abused by disgruntled employees that were tired of barking
-Dogs being thrown in an unventilated room and ignored 24/7
-Kennel cough, etc.
all this for $50-75/day or night
P.M me if you want more
Before I get accused... no I am not a dog walker or dog sitter, so don't ask. And the people I worked for at these places were pretty cool and pretty fair (at least to the humans working there), so this is not just a pissed off employee on a tirade.
And when people say they have had great experiences at these places, it is because they butter you up when you pick up/drop off and tell you how great your dog was and how they played all day, etc. Of course they will be super friendly and tell you how much they love "Oscar" and how he is such a good boy. They would be complete idiots not to.
Final note: If you take your dog to daycare while you work because you think he or she will be lonely at home, please reconsider. They are much happier and healthier at home. Plus, they are only going to do what dogs do all the time, sleep. If you need to board a dog because you're leaving town, I would first ask every friend you know if they could either take your dog for a week or stay at your place instead, and offer some money. If all else fails, go to a REPUTABLE vet that does boarding.... and when I say reputable, the only place I can currently recommend (that we have found) in this area is Hope clinic. And I don't know if they board. veterinary Emergency Referral Group is also amazing, but they are not a regular vet and i am sure they don't board either.
Hope no one is offended or scared by this post, but sadly this is the reality of this industry... I pray that not all places are this bad. -
I don't doubt all of what you say is true and then some. I once had the misfortune of having to walk
through the basement of a doggie daycare facility due to a problem with the building elevator.
At the time they offered vet services which was close to me and the vet came in at a special time
just for me and my dog. To get to her office space also downstairs we had to walk through the boarding space. It was close to Christmas and there was not an empty space on the floor. Kennel Cabs side to side, stacked on top of each other I was horrified. There was no way any of these animals were getting out to play or walk around. I was never secure enough prior to that to trust boarding-- always worried about my dog getting out or getting sick kennel cough etc/ after seeing what I saw that day I would never consider it. My neighbor who used to bring her Westie there thought they were also very good until I told her what I saw. They didn't have room enough for the animals they had and they were still booking more. If I can't take my dog with me on vacation I get someone to come in to care for my dog and cat. When possible a friend stays at my home. If I can't hook up a decent arrangement I STAY HOME.
Now this was only one place, but a local business which I still hear people swear by. When they can
charge and get 65 - 85 per night for a small dog I'm sure they aren't willing to turn anyone away.
What my eyes saw was a cityscape of different size kennel cabs with little to no floor space and
not enough fresh air circulating around. I believe you and I'd be very careful before I'd ever consider
doing this. -
I agree lots of facilities may not be great, but they aren't all bad. My friend's dog is very sensitive and shy. Before leaving her for 2 weeks, they took her for several shorter day and overnight visits an she was very happy to go back, and her time there actually boosted her confidence with other dogs--she's having tons more fun at off-leash now. So it's not all bad.
I feel like, if it's really bad, a dog won't be happy to go back in. They will let you know.
Definitely not ideal, but most vets board animals. If you're desperate her vet might take the dog for a few days. -
there is a place one or two blocks from the mouth of the battery tunnel on the carol gardens side that is pretty good... also Dogs den is at 501 5 ave park slope

Mine goes to this one, they are very good!!

From my personal experience, I must say that MOST of the places are horrible, only a very few are decent...
Good luck! -
Just checked out the website, this place does look pretty good! The country kennel experience seems way better than a cramped, indoor city boarding room. Plus, I like how honest and upfront they are about the risks involved, and how they will handle a problem should one arise. It seems like a family run place, which is a BIG plus. Thanks for sharing Cristina!

My pleasure! :P

My friends used to own Woofs and WHISKERS on Summit street in Carroll gardens, down by the brooklyn Battery tunnel and I spent alot of time there playing with the dogs. It was and is a great facility. There are big cages inside and an outdoor play space. They evaluated dogs that would be compatible to play with each other. and they got to play outside at least 2 times a day for a long time. people whould tour the facility where their dogs will be boarded.
-
I was friend's with the former owners off woofs and whiskers and I know how much care they took in deciding on a buyer for this business. I trusted their judgement and have recommended the facility recently to friends and their Westie had a pleasant stay. I am lucky enough to have a friend come and stay with our guys when we are not there and I still think that staying home with a trusted friend is the best idea but not everyone has that situation. I would be curious if other people have used Woofs and whiskers recently for boarding pets and have some input.

just for the fun of it woofs and whiskers is the one i was thinking of earlier when i said near the tunnel... with old age you start forgetting names and things ...lol

Hey,
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your replies. We ultimately were able to piece together the time of a couple close friends and make it through without boarding. After reading some of your comments... I'm very glad we did! -
Do NOT go to Dog's Den. Call the ASPCA and ask how many times this place has been reported and cited for abuse. Read the reviews online. So many dogs have been hurt there, and the managers/owners don't care. Our dog used to go here and we found out she had been mistreated - hit, locked in a cage for hours. Obviously, we don't go there anymore, and I don't know why they haven't been shut down yet.

I have a good reference if anyone wants to PM me. She is a local dog walker who takes dogs in - I think only one or two at a time - her home. She watches both my dogs when I leave town. They adore her.
-
I have left my cat at Woofs and Whiskers quite a few times over the years. They are fantastic.
-
I love the company of cats. I take only one client at a time. Your cat will feel at home right away. References are available upon request.
