A heads-up to those of you who shop at Met Foods on Smith St -- I have noticed several times that the prices when checking out don't match the prices that are marked on the shelves or on the items themselves. Usually the manager will adjust and honor the price marked (although once the manager was irate when I asked for the sale price and instead of honoring the price, he tore down the sale tag from the shelf).

It's frustrating to have to watch as each item is scanned through, but is there another grocery store in the neighborhood? Union Market is great but it is way too expensive (on the other hand, at least they're honest about their mark-ups...).

    Met Foods on Vanderbilt between Prospect Place and Park Place does the same thing. Also the photos in the ads are not always worded or pictured correctly verses what is in the store. Lastly, sometimes the stuff on sale in the weekly flyer doesn't come in until later in the week...however other brands will be there sort of "in disguise."

    I tend to shop at Met Food, the Key Food on Seventh, will look for deals and very fresh items at the various Korean stands and I belong to the Park Slope Food Coop. Some folks take their shopping carts to the PathMark downtown although there are "rush hours" here where the lines can be long.

    Lastly, the various Farmers' Markets, the big one in particular on GAP, can be great. The prices can be high but sometimes really great.

    I have learned to carry a plastic or some other bag and when I walk I pick up a few things here and there, and then, do a "big shop" once in a while.

    Not only are their scanners suspect, but that Met Foods is filthy and completely disgusting. There's a slightly better Met Foods on Henry and Degraw for local shopping. I've never had a problem there with inconsistent scanners. There's also a Key Food on Atlantic and Clinton which is, quite frankly, pretty horrible as well. Other than that (and Union Market and Trader Joe's, of course), the grocery stores in CG and CH suck. I live in CG and do most of my shopping at either Fairway or the Key Food on 5th (and Fresh Direct).

    Best option of course is to get your meat at Staubitz, your seafood at Fish Tales, your produce at the great produce store on Court and Union and your bread at Caputo's. :D

    Oh and yes, to reiterate what Stoop Lady said, on Sunday the Carroll Gardens green market on Smith and President is amazing. Support it or lose it!

    A couple other things that annoys me about that store is they're always stocking the shelves, whether it be a 1 in the afternoon or 6 at night, it's always a mess. They also never carry the same flavors of stuff like cereal bars. Get peanut butter one week but go back the next and you won't find it.

    I was going to go last night but decided I was going to haul it over to the Key Food on 5th ave in North Slope. It was night and day.

    Carroll Gardens needs another real grocery store further down on Smith st or Court. It's convenient to order from Fresh Direct but they're expensive too.
