Safety advice: Park Place between Washington and Classon — Brooklynian

Safety advice: Park Place between Washington and Classon

Hi all,

I recently moved to Brooklyn and am contemplating moving into an apartment on Park Place, between Washington and Classon Aves. I'm a single, white woman in my mid-twenties, and I'll be walking home late from the subway a few nights a week (sometime between 11pm-1am).

I've never lived in Brooklyn before, and I'm just wondering if it's safe for me to walk around this part of PH on my own at night, particularly east of Washington? The area looks a little more sketchy and (I'm led to believe) used to be more dangerous, but I don't know if that's still the case.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

  • You should be fine. That area is very safe and has seen a lot of change over the past few years, namely new bars and restaurants.

The most danger you'll encounter is on this board when you opine that anything east of Washington is PH! :) Most posters insist that the area east of Washington is Crown Heights and will fight to the death in order to defend their view.

    Otherwise, welcome to the neighborhood!
  • youll be fine:)

just keep your eyes open etc
  • I would look for a block not notorious for loud block parties

    Neighborhood is fine though
  • I wouldn't be overly concerned about safety, but it can be noisy - the school/playground across the street makes the block a bit of a gathering place, at times. I don't live on the block, so I don't know if things break up at a reasonable hour or not, but my gut says not to live in a front-facing apartment on that stretch.
  • Jack is right. I am in the camp that believes that block is Crown Heights.

The closer you are to Washington and the park, the noisier it will be. That park is a major party/hang out spot all summer long. It's quieter towards Classon. WhyFi gives good advice - pick an apartment that does not face the street, or where your bedroom isn't on the street. If you're moving into the newly refurbed buildings on the block, you're in party central.

One more thing. Make an effort to get to know your neighbors. Even the ones who hang out in the park. A simple "hi" every time you see them will suffice. That goes a long way toward people seeing you as okay and not considering you a target.
  • what Rosweed says. I live 1 block further into Crown Heights on Park and it is night and day in regards to noise from one block to the other -- but if your bedroom isn't at the front windows, I think it should be fine.
  • Great, thanks so much for the advice, everyone. Much appreciated.

(After perusing the board a little further, I see that the border wars are very enthusiastically debated indeed!)

The room is towards the back of the apartment (and I'm a pretty deep sleeper), so I think it'll be fine.

Will definitely make an effort to say hello to the neighbours, as Rosweed suggested.
  • a nod of the head and a smile goes a long way.

Hey, that's not what this thread is about.

This thread is about making everyone feel welcome in the neighborhood, and keeping everyone safe: Longtime posters as well as new ones.
  • The noise level in the park on that street has dropped considerably. During the summer of 2009, there were very loud parties almost every weekend. This summer there has been one and it was shut down around 10.30 p.m.

If you're coming home very late at night keep your eyes and ears open and you should be fine.
