If I recall correctly, you have to make a request to your local post office that you need a lock installed.
They will make a request for that and the key holder (box) will be installed; they will do it at their convenience (pretty quick) and then you have to hand in the key to the mail carrier.
If the box to hold the key is already there, then you just have to wait for the mail carrier. I do not live in that street, so I can't help you with that.
Good LOCK, -
on a related note. i lost the 1 sole remaining key to my mailbox
so it's chockfull of 2 weeks worth of mail
should i pop the lock and take it to the hardware store for a replacement?
or should i contact the post office?
my landlord doesn't have a spare mailbox key -
i'm on st marks... we lost our key 2 days after moving in (ha). we bought a replacement at the hardware store and installed it ourselves. BUT, it had to be replaced from the inside. we left a note and asked the mail lady to buzz us when she came by, which she did.

I just replaced one of these, the lock cost me $6.50 and it took no more than 5 minutes to install. The tough part is popping the lock, from the inside it just unscrews but they are pretty secure from the outside.

dont do it!! just wait for the mail person and ask them to open and you can replace from the inside like other poster said.
