Swing Park On Eastern Parkway — Brooklynian

Swing Park On Eastern Parkway

I grew up in Crown Heights long ago and I was wondering about the swing park not far from Eastern Parkway and Washington Ave.What is it like there now? So many wonderful memories of the area.

  • Hmmm.

Was a public park, shaped like a triangle? Could it be the Robert McNair park now?

  • Subject: Swing Park

No the McNair Park used to be called Guider Park. The park had swings, a skelly court, a sprikler for the kids to cool off on hot days.It was definitely on Eastern Parkway near the museum the gardens and the library.
  • Mount Prospect Park?

Site of the old water reservior....

    It is very round.

....has an excellent playground and is located between the library and the Bot Gardens.

....how long ago are we talking?

    Have you tried Google maps?
  • We used to call it the Swing Park.I moved away in 1964 so long ago. That must be it.The entire area was such a great place to grow up and so safe.
  • Thank you so much whynot. I am sure the places we played are not what they were.
  • What's a skelly court?
  • The playground and park are actually in really good shape.
Here's a bunch of photos random people have uploaded.

  • We had fun with very little money lol
  • Ahhhhhhh- cool! Times were simple then, huh? Thanks!
  • Times were simple.People looked out for each other.Everyone knew one another and we all got along or our Moms would hear about it.Guider Park which is now McNair was a once in awhile walk because the good humor man always had his cart there. We played box ball there.Clara Barton had a dirt yard, a concrete yard and a grass yard. The boys would play stickball in the dirt yard while the girls played games with the spaldeen (pink ball). We also played punchball in the concrete yard with the boys which was like baseball but you punched the spaldeen and ran around the bases.Back then most mothers did not work so they would sit outside in their chairs and keep an eye out on us.When Ebbets Field was still a ball park we could hear the games from my street. The schools were great.I attended P.S.241.The gardens were beautiful and in the winter we would ice skate at Prospect Park.We had metal roller skates which were for the springtime. We even played tennis against the schoolyard wall.A line was painted on it by the school.Movie theaters were all in walking distance and Franklin Ave had a variety of stores then. We stayed out late at night with our parents because very few had air conditioning.
  • perhaps not as clean fun, but here's some photos I took of my Dog in Mt prospect Park.

"Santa Con is coming to town" (sing for maximum effect, then click)

Santa con is a parade of drunk Santas.
  • Santa Con is a bunch of drunk entitled assholes having no respect for the fact that if you're white you can do whatever the fuck you want and it's funny whereas if you're black you have to worry about cup checks.
Sorry but I'm gonna keep beating that "Santa Con is a bunch of spoiled dipshits from SF" drum until I'm blue in the face (or from frostbite, which is about when I'll have to go on the warpath again about it.)
  • One person gets ticketed for an open container cause he's young and black.

Then someone else shows up in a santa costume in december and pours a clearly labeled bottle of Jack Daniels on his homies on St. John's at 10 in the morning and whatever, the cops aren't worried about it cause it's just fun?

    I'm white. but fuck that.
  • I'm not so sure about that. Yesterday, I was having lunch in Canarsie, and I saw a couple of white guys dressed up as Santas chugging beer from a funnel. Within minutes, two squad cars pulled up, beat the crap out of 'em and then issued desk appearance tickets. Meanwhile, a group of Haitian guys across the street were leaning against a fence, drinking Prestige and watching the whole scene unfold, but the cops didn't pay them any mind.

It's payback time. Viva la revolucion!
  • Clearly there is a time for everything. As per jacks story, the time for drinking in mount prospect park (or Canarsie) in a Santa outfit is not now. Now, is the time for biking around prospect park in my opinion.
