Is Linden Boulevard at New York Avenue safe?
Hey all--
Not sure if this is technically is Prospect Lefferts Gardens, but I think it is. I just moved to New York from Montana, and am living in a place on Linden Boulevard, near New York Avenue. I have heard conflicting reports about the safety of this neighborhood.
Does anyone have any insights? Thanks!

No matter what neighborhood you're moving into, I would suggest taking a self-defense basics class, especially if you're female. You'll mostly learn how to engage in and project awareness of your surroundings, but also how to respond if you are threatened or (despite your precautions) attacked. I took one years ago and use the offensive skills I learned practically everyday.

Straight from montana to linden blvd??
i do NOT think youd feel comfortable there, IMHO.....
if you like new york ave, try further north, like near eastern pkwy....or if you like PLG, try closer to bedford, lincoln road, even winthrop is ok... -
Problem is I had to get my apartment ahead of time. I got an internship short notice and had to get here, so I jumped on the first decent looking, cheap place. It's a fine house, with decent roommates, but I've just heard bad things. Now I've got a four month lease and not sure what to do. Is Linden Boulevard worth losing a deposit over, or is it just 'not ideal'?

It's near the hospitals which is nice -- there tends to be a lot of people coming/going both of the visitor/patient way and the doctors/nurses way. But it's not an area I would want to live in, personally. Not much going on in a social-scene sort of way and it's far out there (long commute if you're working in manhattan, etc). Not sure what else to say since it seems you're already moving there -- just be really aware of your surroundings, be friendly, etc. I work not too far from there and a smile and hello goes a long way.

I've worked right by there for almost 7 years. There's definitely a lot of street crime there and not much going on for night life. There are some good eats (I love Food For You on Church for great Trini roti and Mama Luisa's on New York and Fenimore for old school Italian heroes, just as a few examples). This is definitively Flatbush, not Prospect Lefferts Gardens. Be careful. Shootings are a fairly regular occurrence, and I know people that have been held up at gunpoint right by the Winthrop 2 train stop.

I don't mean to scare you, but Linden Blvd and the neighboring Church Ave, and Martense are dangerous at night. It might sound ridiculous, but stay away from groups of teenagers/young adults standing around the corners and stoops, as there is a pretty sizable gang problem in the area. In fact, last year there was essentially a full out gang war between the Boods and the Crips in the vicinity of Nostrand Ave and Church which led to over 20 people being shot in the confines of that precinct during August 09 alone.

Btw, it's really ridiculous that your're landlord called that area Prospect Lefferts Gardens. -
worked not far from there a while back. got mugged--jumped from behind and strangled-- in broad daylight. You're just SW of East NY and right up against Brownsville... it's a hardscrabble place for sure.
overall, be aware of what's going on around you at all times. -
It's only a couple of blocks from the south-eastern fringe of PLG, but the feel of that area is very different from PLG proper. Still, it's only a four month lease and, with the precautions recommended by other commenters, you'll be fine.
As a side note, unscrupulous real estate people have been calling Linden Blvd PLG for a long time. When I was house-hunting in the early '70s the first "PLG" house I was show was on that street. Fortunately I had friends living in the neighborhood who set me straight. -
Back in the days on the boulevard of Linden, we carried ourselves in a proper manner while engaging in witty repartee. I was a very well mannered young man, and only 5'3" tall. My friend Tip was scrawny too, but what he lacked in size, he made up for in agility and style. We stuck together and, despite our positive auras and wholesome lifestyle, nobody gave us any trouble. Just be true to yourself, avoid the RIAA and stay on point. All the time.

HA!
Yea Linden is about where things start to go from "having character" to just being all out scary. But it's 4 months and you avoided the worst part of the year. You should be alright. Check in with us OK??? -
Here's a women's self-defense class that meets in the area:

Again, highly recommended. You will feel more confident afterwards. -

I think I'm going to get a new apartment. I want my time in new york to be memorable, and not in a "mehh.....that wasn't much fun" kind of way. I'm searching for new apartments but heck, that's hard in and of itself. Oh well haha. Thanks for the advice.
