This is your Daily Heights on Vanilla

Well... everyone's raving about this new message board system called Vanilla. So I installed a test board:

http://www.dailyheights.com/vanilla/

Somebody e-mailed DH a few days ago and encouraged us to ditch phpBB in favor of Vanilla. Any thoughts?

The only thing I don't like so far is that unregistered guests can't post (yes... controversial... I know.)

That, and the user icons are kinda small...

  • It's kinda twee looking...
  • What else does it offer? I like phpbb, and you did find a way to block anons if we decided to do that, didn't you? If we don't like the look, we could skin it.

    Edited for clarity.
  • twee: [Brit] affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute or quaint
Well, presumably you could configure it to look more manly...

Nothing that really makes me want to get rid of phpBB. Yet. It is being developed rapidly and people are adding extensions all the time.

The ideal would be a BB system that doubles as a blog... so when you post a new topic, you could use a standard short title (such as "Restaurant recommendations?" or "Bruce Ratner's Love Child?"), or you could go with a full-on blog post (full HTML, maybe 1-2 paragraphs max with images). That way Rhodamine could get better exposure for his photo essays...

Haha. It kinda reminds me of a Craig's List forum also. What's wrong with the current board? Even the Anon. Guests seem to have stopped being trolls lately. *knock on wood*
  • My only real concern would be security/spam issues. I'll do some Googling later and see what comes up. The only other problem might be SQL strain. I hear some of these free boards are nightmares for hosts. Other than that, i really don't care except that PHPBB works great, has a wide user and support community, lotsa MODS and is one of the standards.
  • I guess I could get used to it. I like this format better though.

Oh I just love your conversations with yourself

    I fear change.
Plus, I suspect that Ratner is behind it somehow. That or the Muddy Waters lady.

Does Vanilla have the "idea" emoticon?

Also, are you going to have to use eminent domain to wipe out some other websites to make room for the new DH?

If so, may I suggest this site?

Yeah, but he left out the obligatory "where the ladys at?"
  • Oh I though the obligatory phrase was "Pro Ho in the house"
  • The secret administrator password is "MADHOT"
  • Subject: emotional roller coaster

Dude, you so got my hopes up with the "I love to knit" sample post.

Don't phunk with my heart again like that.
  • More like pukenilla. PHPBB is better. I use http://www.punbb.org/ though, it's lighter weight. I like it a lot but you need to install a mod in order to be able to send PMs.
