Oaxaca Taqueria on Prospect by Franklin?

If it's the same people. there's one on Smith St and another opened up not to long ago on 4th ave. All-in-all, mediocre tacos, but some people like them. I'd stick to Chavelas.

Definitely the best Mexican in Crown Heights right now. They set a pretty high bar for any new place. -
I hadn't heard that -- but any new business is good news!

Ditto!!! I love them
Also, aren't the people from Chavellas opening the new restaurant on Franklin and Sterling? That's a lot of good food coming in (also the rumor of sushi from the people of Nam's where Narobi's Knapsack was and the upcoming brick-oven pizza across the street) -
Damn, we're in restaurant heaven. There goes Crown Heights reputation for murder and mayhem. Can we somehow keep it from becoming Park Slope Light?
-
Even if it does turn out to be mediocre, I hope people will go to the new place.
This way, I won't have to wait in line as long at Chavellas. -
Eh, Chavella's does tortas and entrees decent enough, but their tacos are downright skimpy -- even for $2 during happy hour. Looking forward to a little healthy competition.
-
Oaxaca is really expensive. Mediocre tacos all $3-4 each...
Overpriced for something that bears NO resemblance to any of the cuisine of Oaxaca. -
On ilovefranklinave he talked to the people and confirmed that their menu will be the same as the other 2 locations
-- but he also reported that Bristen's is closed for renovations (I spotted that a few days ago) -- but will be reopening as a noodle and dumpling place.

xlizelx:Bristen's closing makes complete sense....the burgers were yummy and the garden was nice, but it was always empty and had sporatic hours. Not having a beer lic, and trying to compete with dutch boy was a mistake.
Basically, Dutch Boy's burgers aren't as good, but they have beer. ....people seem to really like beer.
Capt:One can have good places to eat AND murder and mayhem. Criminals have to eat too.
Back on the topic of mexican-
Is anyone eating at the place with the little skulls on Washington (it's by Thai Udom)? I like their nachos, but everything else is only ok. They also do not have a beer lic, and are always empty..... -
^^^ Taqueria de los Muertos? I have burritos there every once in a while - I like 'em. I prefer their burritos to Maya but Maya a) has a tofu burrito for the wife b) takes cards.

If you eat at Chevalla's, you wait.
This way, I won't have to wait in line as long at Chavellas.
If you try to pick up your order at Chevella's, you wait.
If you order for delivery, it's there well before you and the S.O. can decide on which movie to watch. -
After similar research, I also frequent Maya.
....but I look forward to this Oaxaca place.
Hopefully I will be served despite having almost no chance at pronouncing the place's name, much less spelling it. -
I've never waited to pick up at Chavella's .. it's the only way we eat there now. Living 1 block away makes me feel like as ass to order delivery.
Taqueria de los Muertos is good -- but no beer, no cards, and other places that have one or both in the area lead us to not go too often. It really is always empty though. I'm surprised they've lasted this long. BUT if they were open until 4am I would eat there all the time. I want food LATE -- especially with new bars opening and with them letting you bring in food. I would order nachos and drink beers at Washington Commons if I could... -
Whoa- Bristen's a noodle and dumpling place?!? huh.....interesting....I'll miss their brunch.
-
Haven't tried this new place, but I like de los Muertos on Washington. Their veggie burrito with the squash filling is quite yummy, and the margarita pitcher is a pretty good deal. Hope they make it, cause there never seems to be many people in there. Maya on Vanerbilt is also a very yummy and filling joint too, and they seem to be doing pretty good business.

I live almost literally around the corner, but I've ALWAYS had to wait for pick-up. Granted, I haven't attempted a pick-up in more than a year, but it was consistent enough that I stopped trying altogether. I'll tip the delivery guys a few bucks for the convenience and, judging by their average response time, they don't seem to think me an ass - they seem happy to grab my order as soon as it's ready. -
let me say this about bristen's brunch: too expensive for too small servings. good, but for the million dollars they were charging, i want more than one piece of french toast!

Americans always complain about serving sizes. No matter how much their food costs they feel like they should get double. -

Both made the list of the best cheap nachos in brooklyn

went in this afternoon for a sampling of food. 2 vegetarian tacos, 2 vegetarian enchiladas, 1 vegetarian quesadilla, and a bag of chips with salsa was $18something. Not bad. The food was good - although the salsa has a ...weird?... taste that I can't put my finger on but it reminds me of the sauce they put on eel I ate in South Korea...which was good in that context, but not something I want with my chips per say.
Good food and friendly staff.
No chairs for eating in, though - just high tables to stand at.
They deliver and do pick up and are cash only. -
Anyone know if Bristens is back open?

Oh, do they have a menu posted on the window? I'm really looking forward to having something completely different in the nabe. -

Nah, I don't need no fatty portion: It's just that, when compared to the Mexican restaurants in Corona, Queens, or Sunset Park, Chavella's meager tacos tend to pale in comparison. But, that said, they're definitely an asset to the neighborhood. -
i don't understand why restaurants don't take credit cards. they lose a ton of business. especially from me as i rarely carry cash.

BTW - my wife has been recently complaining that the tacos from Chavella's are a bit overstuffed. I would have to agree. Either a) you're nutters or b) they've heard your grousing and have made changes. Give them another shot. -

smug alert
chavella's is good though, the plato don is where it's at... los muertos was pretty lackluster in my opinion... the margarita pitcher would have been a great deal if it had tasted good... instead, i got a cheap pitcher full of shitty, weak margaritas. I'd rather have one good one than a pitcher of ice and sour mix. -
a bit smug, maybe, but COME ON! complaining over the serving size of "expensive" TWO DOLLAR tacos? that you don't have to travel for?
give me a break. -

Not all two-dollar tacos, just like two-dollar patties and pizza slices, are created equal. That is all. Fare-thee-well, message-board thread.
give me a break. -
Chevella's can't give me enough chicken mole. The portion is always maddeningly small....
