Berkeley Bob's visit to Sterling Place — Brooklynian

Berkeley Bob's visit to Sterling Place

I have posted on this board a few times how my family has a long history on Sterling Place going back to 1900's when my grandfather bought a 3 story building between Franklin and Bedford. We basically fled from the street when my grandfather who was held up a few times in the early sixties, died after being pistol whipped during one of the holdup's. He was in his early 70's.

About 13 years ago after coming back to Brooklyn with my wife who is from Brooklyn, we drove to the building and checked out the street. Seemed dangerous as where my grandfather had a dry cleaning, tailor shop it was turned into a small grocery store with the cashier behind bullet proof glass.
This summer I dropped my son and nephew off at Prospect Park and walked to Sterling. Had no idea it would be such a long walk. Was impressed with Sterling. The people I saw looked nice and the buildings looked good. I walked past a school where I'm sure my mom must have gone to when she was a girl. When I crossed Franklin it seemed not as nice but still ok. The building my grandfather owned is there but the first floor store was bricked over and now must be a residence. Wanted to talk to some people but really no one to strike up conversation with. Walked back going down I think Washington which was much livelier to Eastern Parkway and really enjoyed the scene at the library with a farmer's market and a teenage jazz band. Could see why my mom loved her neighborhood so much.
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my walk and visit to Crown Heights.

  • That is so nice, thanks for sharing your visit. I hope you come back and visit again, plus keep posting on Brooklynian!
  • Thanks Mamacita!
  • Berkely Bob,
I wish I had the opportunity to have met you! I recall on another thread we spoke briefly about your prospective visit. Sorry that I missed your time here.
  • Interesting, informative perspective. As a Sterling Place resident here in the border zone, a lot of this rings true.
  • Bob, which building is the one that had the storefront bricked over? What kind of store used to be there?
  • Back in 1996 when I first visited, the store was I think called Lucky 7. It was a small store that sold snacks and stuff like that. Not really sure. I think I bought a bag of chips and a soda. Clerk was behind glass or plexiglass. Looked like it was still a dangerous place to be. The building is fairly close to Bedford which I found interesting as I remembered the old Studebraker building and also the building that use to be Loman's.
Crown Heights was an area that I had considered to dangerous to go back to. Too much family trauma. I am so glad that I have been able to get past that and to be able to go back see that it is a very viable neighborhood.
Just sorry that I wasn't able to talk to anyone.
I really love Brooklyn. Since I met my wife I go back every year and she has taken me to some really great neighborhoods. If It wasn't for the weather I would like to live in Brooklyn.
  • I visited Brooklyn last week with my son and we did a tour of Crown Heights. Showed my son my grandfather's old building on Sterling and we checked out the bed and breakfast across the street. Had a nice talk with the owner. We walked on Franklin and I was amazed at all the new business's. Lots of changes from when I played here as a child in the 50's.
