Hairdressers — Brooklynian

Hairdressers

anonymous
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I have recently moved to Park Slope (Windsor Terrace end around 15th St) and am desperate to find a good hairdresser in the area. I'm looking for someone who can cut women's hair really well - not too trendy or cutting edge (no pun intended), but someone who knows his/her stuff and can cut really well. Does anyone have any recommendations please? Salon name or stylist? THANK YOU!

  • Pamona on 7th Ave. A small place and ask for the owner - I think her name is Lori. She'll listen to you, cuts well and is reasonable (maybe $60ish) She's my backup plan when I can't get to my regular person (who is a good friend and cuts my hair for free)
  • btw, I think it's around 13-14th St. I always forget...but definitely on the S. end of the Slope. I live in WT and I walk past all the time
  • Subject: Good hairdressers?

Thanks so much for the recommendation. I have a job interview tmrw so REALLY need a good hair day...
  • I love my stylist and now she works freelance (comes to YOU) she's a stylist for the Soaps TV, etc. (no, I am not Susan Lucci) and has worked in all the top salons. doesnt charge an arm and a leg either....like $65 a cut. does amazing color too. PM me and I can give you her number, dont want to post it here
  • well, call now if you are trying to find something for tomorrow!

Thanks TrixieNYC. Since I'm a newbie here I am waiting for my registration to be approved before I can PM you. Hope it won't take too long. I'll get back to you once I have it. V much appreciate your recommendation.
  • i'm assuming none of you have curly hair... while it's a blessing to have it, it's also a bitch to find the right salon/hairdresser. i've been with mine for 20+ years, and she's in jersey.

(and once, at a party, a woman with hair like mine approached me and asked for the name of my hairdresser because she hadn't found anyone in the city she trusted with her hair. i told her who i went to in jersey and it turned out we were going to the same place. )

now, haircuts come along with a visit to mom (and if i'm super nice, she'll pay for one)

I know several people who go to Medusa (the one near the hardware store) and like Kelly.
  • I always laugh at the name Medusa for a hair salon. I don't want a head full of snakes. I like my snakes on a plane, thankyouverymuch (btw, WTF is up with that movie?!)

This is a little late, but I have also been looking for a new stylist in the neighborhood... on my way to Pamona to check them out I saw SlopeSuds (7th, btw 14th/15th)... great atmosphere, unpretentious staff.. and I left with a haircut I love that didn't break the bank.
  • Hmmm...I noticed that place but couldn't figure out what it was. I thought it was either a laundromat or a place where they sold hair product.
  • Subject: Medusa

I'll testify that the stylists at Medusa know their stuff. I'd been going to the same stylist in Manhattan for close to 15 years, but wanted to try somewhere closer to home. I got a great cut by Anastasia at Medusa - she did exactly what I asked at a reasonable price and was very nice. She even refused to make a recommendation for a particular product they sold there because she'd not used it, yet. I've started getting my hair cut by her regularly. Oh, and I have straight hair cut short, btw.

Medusa also has a curly hair expert. I can't recall her name, but my gf has curly hair and has not been happy with a cut in years. She was even afraid to go to the stylist. She told me after this woman cut her hair it was the best cut she'd ever had!

BTW - I am not a Medusa staff member - just a customer.
  • Subject: SlopeSuds sexist?

P.S. - I just checked out the site for SlopeSuds and found out that they follow the antiquated practice of charging different amounts for men and women. As a woman with very short hair, that just chaps my hide. How can they charge more for a woman with a short, simple hairstyle than a man with long hair or a dye job? Ridiculous.
  • Subject: Thank you!

Hi Flexi, just a note to say thanks for the Panoma recommendation. Went to see Lori y'day and she was fab. Great haircut and xlnt value ($55). Wanted to know who had recommended her...

    Cheers! :D
  • P.S. thanks for clarifying SlopeSuds. I'd been wondering too.
  • Glad you liked your cut. I have only been there 2x (she's a backup plan when I can't get to my regular person), so I don't think she'd even recognize my name
