Boiler maintenance — Brooklynian

Boiler maintenance

Does anyone know anything about the service provided through National Grid that gives you a free boiler cleaning/flushing/checkup? I thought I remembered a conversation about this on Bklynian last year, but can't find it.

Anyone know of what I speak? Is it worth the $$?

  • I don't know of any free boiler tune up offered by national grid but I just got a mailing that looks like a scam. It appears to come from national grid since the letterhead says "nationalgrid energy services" but the fine print says "HomeServe his not affiliated with National Grid...." It is an offer to insure your home heating system (covered parts and repairs) and includes a "FREE ANNUAL TUNE-UP" for $336.42/yr.
  • I think that legally NG has to separate itself from it's service division... something about creating a monopoly otherwise. Not positive, but I re-call hearing something about this not too long ago.

If you find any good services let us know! (My boiler needs it big-time)
  • Before National Grid took over the former gas company, the homeowner could pay a fee and have KeySpan come over and check the furnace in the late summer, early fall. Sort of a contract. It was a basic going over, checked the flames, etc. The guys were nice. Not sure what the deal is now as I no longer care for the house I live in and the LL doesn't want to have the contract.
  • i dont know about these gas fired units but you may want to call Olympic Flame /Marathon Energy those guys are pretty good ive had em for years
  • Vigilante services ours. I find them to be trustworthy.
  • StoopLady, that is what I'm talking about...but, I can't seem to find details. If I don't find anything, I'll go with my plumber, who I really like, but thought this may be more cost effective.
