best place to live in nyc

Somewhat tough call and obviously very personal/subjective. Plus, of course, very dependent on $$$$$.
$$$ no object? I would like a big loft somewhere around Union Square. Off on a quietish residential side block though. I'd be literally in the middle of the city, right by a shit load of trains, close to my job, close to BK etc etc. Plus I just like lofts, esp something w/rooftop or outdoor space.
Realistically? I've lived in a few places... the one I like the most is still Greenpoint. I like the quiet + spacious neighborhood feel, and if you live up north it's a 10 minute walk to the 7 train. Plus I'd be able to have a car there; parking is pretty relaxed (especially up north). There's also some decent loft space up there. It's close to Williamsburg, close to the LIE & BQE, close enough to the city that w/a car going in to party is not a problem etc. Living in Manhattan is more convenient, but sometimes I feel like I never get to fully unwind like I did in Greenpoint. -
If money is no option::
Manhattan: I agree with Cool The Kid. I would want a big loft with roof access on a street (somewhere between 12th and 18th street) between 4th Ave and 5th Ave. Great train access, close to both the rest of Manhattan and Brooklyn, etc.
Brooklyn: Fort Greene -- in the triangle made by Fulton, Lafayette, and Vanderbilt or just off of the triangle. Great trains (the A/C line and the G are walking distance and then atlantic terminal has everything else), good food/bars, and a friendly environment. -
Bronx

I'd live in Riverdale, somewhere along Fieldston Rd. I'd have a massive house and walk down the hill to Metro North each morning. -

Really? I don't like Riverdale at all. It's a Robert Moses creation specifically designed to be lacking in mass transit to keep the "bad element" out. They have a good Jewish deli there, and a few other decent restaurants. And Wave Hill makes for an interesting trip once or twice. But I could never see living there.

Yes, it is virtually a gated community. Part of me is very elitist, and would love a complete escape at the end of each day. In this fantasy, I commute each day to GCT, work in midtown, and never interact with the "unwashed masses".
(don't worry, the fantasy will quickly pass). -
I really like living in Sunslope Greensor Terrace!

I want to live in Red Hook.

Shoot, I had responded to this topic with deep and profound profundities on the perfect locations... but it seems my post didn't submit....
I agree Xliz & CTK and BG, plus I would love one of those 2000000000 sq feet brownstones on 6th ave in North slope. If not, I'm happy to take care of Whynot's place while he lives in the Bronx...
