Zora Space on 3rd St/4th Ave — Brooklynian

Zora Space on 3rd St/4th Ave

Has anyone been to the new gallery/cafe on 4th Ave and 3rd St? I just stopped in there today for about the tenth time and I'm always shocked more people aren't there. It's part coffee shop and part art gallery and they have performances at night (and serve beer and wine).

I was talking to the owner and I don't think they are getting a lot of foot traffic. They definitely need better signage (it took me a while to know it was there, and I live around the corner). But they have really cool stuff going on - Marketa Irglova ('Once' and Swell Season) is playing there on Saturday, and the performance space is about the size of my apartment... um, awesome.

They have an art opening tonight as well ... Lots of cool stuff going on and I wanted to give them a shout out because I would love to see them succeed in this neighborhood. And they have a patio in the back... and free wi-fi with lots of tables to work.

And, no, I do not work there. But the business model of running a cafe to support art is pretty awesome and it would be a shame if they didn't make it. So, check it out if you haven't, and if you have... what are your thoughts? I told the owner they need a better sign to start...

  • I might check it out the next day I work from home. Do you know if they serve beer/wine all day?
  • I went in for coffee one morning right after it opened (I'm also right around the corner - neighbors?) - coffee was fine, service unremarkable, but I definitely agree about the signage. Unless they're drawing big crowds for the art events, I'm not sure how they're going to stay in business.
  • I'm sure they serve everything all day. They also have pastries and sandwiches (the ham/turkey/pickle panini is great). I see a few people working on their laptops when I go in there, but I'm surprised the freelance crowd hasn't found this place.
  • this place will take off if people actually know about it - i haven't found a better place in the neighborhood to "work" during the day. (but, i'm apparently the only person in the neighborhood who can't stand snice)

the short dark-haired woman is the owner and she is so sweet. i hope they make it. but i hope the snice crowd doesn't find it, because it's so pleasant during the day right now.
  • Subject: Zora Space on 4th Ave!

This place is great. It's the perfect place to work on my laptop during that day. There are no restricted times/tables. I can work there as long as I want and sit anywhere I want.
The coffee is great and I love the atmosphere. I agree the owner is so sweet too!

I might check it out. I need a place to work from, do they really not mind if you bring your laptop and hang out -given I will buy food and drink? (do they have places to plug in?) How is the food compared to the other places here (Press 195 for instance, seeing some one mentioned the paninis?)
  • Not even close to the same selection as Press 195, but they have a handful of different pre-made sandwiches. But, they just changed their pastry selection (in the past week) and the new pastries are amazing. Almond croissant is the best one I've had in the neighborhood... and I don't say that lightly. Ham and cheese is good too. And there's a goat cheese tart...
  • Exactly what Amsterdam3 says. Not the selection, but an amazing smaller set of yummy things. You can linger for a long time they don't care for how long or what you buy. I do love the veggie sandwich selection though. And they had fresh-squeezed lemonade all summer!
  • Oh-- and yes there are outlets to plug in!
  • new accounts should be banned from posting glowing reviews and having running conversations with other brand new accounts where they laud praise on a new business. i'd be curious to know from a moderator if amsterdam3 and skywriter have the same IP address.
  • They do not.
  • Just eyeballing it, but I believe amsterdam3 is probably not the owner and is probably genuinely a big fan of the place. Not sure about skywriter though.

Sorry for the level of suspicion, but it's a fact of the boards that people come on here all the time to anonymously promote their businesses.
  • Admittedly Off topic post:
You mean I can't count on moderators to make sure people are speaking from an objective point of view? ....that people write things on this site that aren't the objective truth?

And the mods are ok with this, and/or have chosen to not spent their time making sure people are unbiased?

....that I have to take things with a grain of salt on the internet? :D
  • I don't know skywriter and I don't work for the gallery.

I did, however, create an account so I could post to this topic. I have perused this board for years, but haven't been prompted to respond. In this case, I wanted to add my two cents in hopes a new neighborhood business succeeds. My only bias comes from the fact that it's around the corner from my apartment and (I think) a really nice addition to area.

I understand the suspicion on new accounts/posters, but I'd suspect that many first-time posters create accounts when they happen across a topic to which they can finally contribute.
