Anyone sold a used car in NYC thru the classifieds before?

Anything I should know? Any tips?

It's time for me to sell my 1988 Volvo stationwagon. My dad is a Volvo mechanic (in D.C.) and has found a newer cheap Volvo for me to drive. He told me to put mine on the market for $1500. For being almost 20 years old and having 200K+ miles its in great shape.

I'm kind of worried there are scary NYC scammers out there waiting to prey on first time amatuer used car sellers.

I know not to let anyone test drive the car w/o me in it. I know to take my tags off the car as soon as its sold.

    I sold a car on Craigs too.
    But I'm looking at taking a roadtrip south - do you think your Volvo could last cross country?

    I'd say so but I obviously can't make any promises. It has no engine or transmission problems whatsoever.

    Three times in the past few years my brother has driven to Colorado and back. For the past 6 years or so the car has been used primarily for driving between NY and DC a few times a year.

    i posted it on craigs list and it was sold in less than a day. some guy didnt even bother to come and take a look. i sold it under a market rate.

    my insurance payment was coming up. so i was thinking. save money on insurance. so i sold it like 2k under :p.

    Totally promising. Did your dad do the upkeep on it?

    manual or automatic, and how many miles per gallon do you get?

    p.s. the car I sold was my dad's station wagon from D.C. that I'd had for a couple years . . . the guy I sold it to was from DC, and was deeeelighted to be getting a car that hadn't been in NY that long, and was a one family ownership.

    Was your car used before you?

    I prefer to take in the (NJ Turnpike) sites by car.

    by sites you mean long car jams, ugly factories and some patches of greenery and tons of gas wasted. :twisted: :twisted:

    I tried to sell my car on craigslist and there are a lot of scammers in there. You might have your time wasted. There was one guy that claimed that he was from Africa and that someone was going to come by and pick the car up for shipping. Apparently this happens a lot.

    What is the book value? Maybe you can donate the car and get a tax rightoff and not have the hastle of selling it. The only issue is that the Federal Government has made the write off based on the price that the donation agencies have got for the car.
