WOW! A bit after 5pm it was just like a sudden 5-minute hurricane at 9th st. and 7th ave. Never saw anything like it in Brooklyn. Very powerful and dramatic!

  • Subject: tornado?!?

i think it must have been very close to Dean St and 6th.
  • Yes, crazy. We're three doors down from there, and part of the top of our brick building blew down onto the fire escape--I think it was either struck by lightning or we had a brief tornado. And a bathtub worth of water blew in all the windows in like seconds. Unbelievable.
  • Tree down on 11th btw 5/6. FYI
  • It was a mini tornado!! within 30 seconds it had flooded our kitchen and living room. INTENSE!! Seriously, 2 inches of water in the short time we were able to run and close all the windows. It sprayed my kitchen table which was 4 feet away from the window.

Note to self: keep windows closed when storm is approaching.
  • No doubt, that was a tornado-like storm, ambulances and fire dept is all over the area now. Heavy shit on the roof took off across the street!
  • If you are driving do NOT come anywhere near Atlantic/Flatbush/5th or 7th aves

It's a hot mess of car accidents or just plain traffic congestion..
  • It turned absolutely BLACK in about 10 seconds down on 16th St and 7th Ave. Neighbor just arrived home and said that trees are down on 10th St near 7th Ave and someone was pulled from a crushed vehicle. Sirens everywhere.
  • So fast! One minute I was shutting the windows, then the rain came down in SHEETS! The old oak trees on my block were bending like palm trees and suddenly started whipping around. That's when I got a call from a relative to get down to the basement.
  • Subject: Scary stuff

I had left a business meeting at 6th and Union when I noticed low, dark clouds zooming fast. The temperature had turned faintly warm.

I walked quickly towards home and had barely reached when all hell broke loose. Violent rain, furious winds, thunder and lightening. I've never experienced such weather in Brooklyn, it was scary.

I hope no one got seriously injured. I cannot stop thinking about an old lady I saw walking around in 7th avenue a bit earlier..
  • So crazy!!
  • Front windows were busted out of Brooklyn Industries (corner of 7th av and 9th)... one of the employees said a delivery guy had to be taken to the hospital due to bad cuts.
  • FOX news picked up the story and just had a blurb about it.
  • 6th Ave in Park Slope seems to have been hit the worst as far as I can tell. FDNY is making their way down the street chopping up downed trees. The wind has permanently changed 6th Ave.
  • Subject: Crazy Rooftop Vid of the Tornado Sweeping into Park Slope

@fabrikstudios just posted this amazing video -
  • Intense!!

I live on 5th st & 7th ave and looked outside during it and saw this poor little girl in shorts running with her backpack. The wind almost whipped her right off the ground at one point.

It also drenched my cat in about 10 seconds who was sitting on the sofa by the windows.
  • AND I CAN"T GET DELIVERY TONIGHT!!!!
  • The steeple fell off Memorial Presbyterian Church corner of 7th Ave & St John's Place! Smashed a car on the way down. Anyone have a photo?
  • 8th street between 4th and 5th ave trees all down on that block.

I just made it home in time to. As soon as you couldn't see out the window i was headed down to the basement.

  • This is on 5th st between 5th & 6th ave! Quality is bad due to crappy iPhone camera.

    image
  • i spent most of the evening cutting the trees blocking 11 st bet 4/5 aves as we have several older people on the street in poor health in case an ambulance needed to get through.. four cars bought it three are salvagable luckilly they missed mine

and to think in the early sixties it survived a plane crash only to fall to this
  • And this after all the damage to the trees from last winter's heavy snows.....sad.

Was it last year or the year before that when there was ANOTHER tornado that caused damage in Ditmas Park and Bay Ridge? I haven't made a study of New York City's weather, but I can't remember ever hearing about tornadoes in this area when I was growing up, (hurricanes, sure....but tornadoes?). Is this a taste of what we have to look forward to as the planet continues to heat up?
  • that one was in August 2007, wind speeds of 111 to 135 mph
  • 5 points will be awarded to anyone who is patient enough to count how many times these guys say "Dude" in their video about the storm.
