If I recall correctly, the reason the older building was designed with such an unpleasant layout was to deter kids from hanging out there. This mall keeps getting more and more awesome.

one of the malls near my parents house has the same rule as well. Certain stores --- Hot Topic, for example --- don't get as much business as they had, but it is certainly less annoying and apparently shop lifting has gone down too. Not to say all teenagers are bad -- but hanging out at the mall for hours on end was something us suburban kids did and it got taken away from us too.

My first reaction was to celebrate, but, despite my cynicism expressed in the about teens, there are many "good kids" and it's unfair to ban them all based on the actions of a few. Oh well, I'll still shot at Target weekly, so, teens or no teens, they have my business.

After the blog post, the Times decided to go all traditional on the story.
It took them three reporters to write this damn thing. I can't tell you how many shootings in Queens I've covered where they didn't bother to send anyone. -

what joke bans ha. i was avoiding bans at toyrus when i was a kid. they didn't allow kids to go in without parents. so if we saw asian folks with kids we just ran ahead of them. security think we are with family. if we had a white friend along. we wait for a white family. lol just walk ahead of them alittle bit.

They're tryin' out Bevo, tryin' out cubebs, Tryin' out Tailor Mades like Cigarette Feends! And braggin' all about how they're gonna cover up a tell-tale breath with Sen-Sen. Never mind pumpin' any water 'til your parents are caught with the cistern empty on a Saturday night and that's trouble, oh, yes we got lots and lots a' trouble. I'm thinkin' of the kids in the knickerbockers, shirt-tail young ones, peekin' in the pool hall window after school, look, folks!

The reason that the new Atlantic Center rules are so ironic is that Ratner claimed his Environmental Impact Statement that the crime in the area was due to Pacific Street between Flatbush & 6th. His official documents say that Atlantic Center was safe, and that the only way to fight the blight of crime was to confiscate the property of individuals south of Atlantic. -

Truer words have never been spoken, er, written. It's kinda sad. You'd think that in a place like Brooklyn the kids would find a more interesting place to hang out. We only hung out in malls because there was no place better to go.
ETA: I don't go to AT/AC all that often, and when I do it's an in-and-out kind of thing. I don't like malls, I especially don't like that one, and therefore I don't linger any longer than I have to. Is the teenager loitering that big of a problem?
Also, I don't know too much about retail, but it would seem to me that AT/AC would be prime retail territory for some upscale chains. There has got to be a huge concentration of professional women, with the incomes to match, living and working in the vicinity of AT/AC. Why haven't stores like Ann Taylor, Talbots, Banana Republic, etc. picked up on this? -

Oooohh, yeah. I see they dynamited that dirt mall that used to have the Toys "R" Us in it...that place made Atlantic Center/terminal look like Saks on Fifth. -
No, not the Alby Mall (or whatever it was called).
....the actual pedestrian mall that still runs from Flatbush to Boroum (sp?) Place.
It used to be super violent on the regular....

I went to Atlantic Center Mall yesterday at about 5PM with my kids, who were hungry and wanted to eat at Subway.....I was bracing myself for the usual rowdy, slightly unpleasant experience there and in the mall in general but surprise - it was busy but not overly crowded and as pleasant a dining and Target shopping experience as it could be.....when I saw that we did not have to carefully walk around crowds of hyped-up teenagers, I remembered this thread. I find it a positive change......
