Apparently you guys lost your energy :P
[Mod note: this is a comment from Brownstoner.com about the Prospect Heights message board, in response to brownstoner himself, who asked his readers if they were OK with him restricting commenting to registered users (much like this forum). Unfortunately, the guy seems to misunderstand that brownstoner has ALREADY restricted commenting... anyway, whatever. Here's his comment about commenting on the DH/PH forum.]
I am so, so glad you have not restricted the Forum and hope you never do. As a renovator the information I find there is invaluable and any barrier to commenting would be awful. As for the home page I don't think it affects the content that much - people who care enough seem to have signed up - interestingly enough, another board, dailyheights also added restriction and now has only a handful of people who post it - really lost its energy.
Lastly, thanks so much for providing a wonderful resource to the community.

oh oh can i mod for night time
? i know i can do it and delete stuff quicker than i can post em. when its flooded with unregistered users!!!  -
armchair........ it would be controversial to anoint you as such... but you probably know more about this PH board than 90% of the users by this point. If you are willing to help out with the spam/trolls, then maybe it would be possible to open up the proverbial floodgates again and inject some "energy" into the forum.
Speaking of energy, I just posted this comment on Brownstoner:"interestingly enough, another board, dailyheights also added restriction and now has only a handful of people who post it - really lost its energy."
haha. oh, the irony - it took me 10 minutes how to figure out how to log in and respond to this!!
While it's not true that "only a handful" of users post to the Daily Heights board (aka Prospect Heights board at Brooklynian.com), it is definitely less freewheeling than the newer Park Slope board, which is unrestricted and rapidly on the verge of eclipsing the volume/traffic that we are seeing on the PH board.
We locked down the PH board out of respect for our volunteer moderators, who like Brownstoner, were sick of dealing with spam and trolls. There are other solutions out there for both, but it's just a matter of getting around to it! -

Subject: moderator position
How controversial would it be if I became the moderator?
just kidding...this board has gotten a little boring...what happened to the spice? -
Did you not read the post above yours? That's spice.
-
actually this is spice (at least one of them anyway)

Did I miss something? Has the forum changed somehow? I hope it was for the better?!
I like it here and would be REALLY bored throughout the day if it was not for this place!
Where else would I go to find out what was up with that shooting on flatbush or the choppers circling around my neighborhood, or which chinese place could get food to my apartment in under 7 minutes at 11pm on a Tuesday?! Or, what's going on with Ratnerville? Or what's Smartmom bitching about now?!!
Sheesh, the thought alone makes me shiver! -

Important distinction: the commenter is talking about the PROSPECT HEIGHTS board, which is now comment-restricted to registered users only, while the PARK SLOPE board and all the others are open for anyone to comment.

Is there a reason for the discrepency between the various boards?

Not really. At the time that we locked this forum, the PS board was barely active, so there was no need to restrict comments to registered users. The PS board is now at least as active as this board but it's not a problem.
I think part of the difference is that this board had a lot of Ratner-related and gentrification-related debates that tended to spiral out of control (I guess Park Slope is 'beyond gentrified' now, so it's a moot point??)
There was one infamous troll, but we took care of him by blocking his IP. Remarkably, he would always slip through again whenever the site configuration changed. I think if we were more diligent about corralling him, that would be half the battle.
Beyond that, what we really need is a craigslist-style "this is spam" button so the burden of spam-catching doesn't fall totally on the moderators. -

i like the craiglist style spam thing to a point. but problem is you can censor other peoples
comments you dont like by just signing on with diffrent ip's and get rid of them
