  • here's the latest: two cars involved but at least one of them jumped the curb and hit a male pedestrian who has had his leg amputated. nobody died. "only" an accident, no crime involved from a police pov.
  • Subject: accident on 8th ave/11th street

I spoke to the men who own/work in Jr's deli. They said that a car service driver was speeding on 8th trying to beat the light at 11th and, instead, rammed a car parked on the corner (right in front of Jr's). Both cars ended up on the sidewalk on top of three people. One man was said to be "stable" and a couple "on their way to temple" were in very bad shape--man may have lost a leg.

I came upon the very bloody scene right after the victims had been taken to the hospital. The cars were still on the sidewalk. There were a lot of people out and about on a beautiful Saturday.
  • just heard from a friend who was in temple--8th ave/14th st--at the time. the couple were members it seems; an announcement was made and prayers were said.
  • Cars. Gotta love 'em, eh?
  • Could someone explain to me, please, why car services don't get tickets. Why folks who make u-turns on 7th Avenue don't get tickets, why vehicles parked in bus lanes don't get ticketed. Why people speed across Vandie to Prospect place and no one notices? Why bus drivers carrying challenged people rush them off the bus but don't get up to help (Not MTA, but buses for this purpose)?
Why does the restaurant on the corner of Flatbush and Prospect place can place bags of raw garbage with cooking oil, out on the sidewalk...no container...which, in turn, spewing out all over the sidewalks? Petty, maybe, but a legitimate source of income. It would make more sense that having traffic tickets for double parking, for instance. The cops would probably find a slew of other criminal activity if they worked on the lighter infractions. Just don't get it at all.
  • Update: The man and woman who were on their way to temple are both doing well. The male will not have any amputations, but has a broken leg and the other broken in multiple places (forget what its called) and the woman has a broken leg or something of the sort, and just came out of the hospital today or is tomorrow.

    what is compound fracture??

A common misconception, but that would actually be a comminuted fracture. A compound fracture is where there is a break in the skin over the fracture, with the broken bone exposed. A fracture can also be both compound and comminuted.
  • i stand corrected.....i didnt hear the word comminuted when my daughter had one after being hit by a car years ago in any event im glad to hear the couple injured will make a relatively easy recovery

I've said it before, I'll say it again - Coney Island Avenue. One guy driving up and down issuing tickets for double parking, day after day, would make the city a fortune. This is to say nothing about fining those businesses that have decided the inner lane is a legitimate part of their business establishment and use it to change tires, dry cars, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of roads in New York City just like it.

Also, people drive like jerks in this town because there are so rarely any consequences for doing so. I know it's not unheard of to get a moving violation from the NYPD, but sometimes it seems like it's a hell of a lot harder than it should be.
  • As of yesterday, they are both home recovering!
  • So this was all because of a cyclist, right?
  • No, it was caused by a speeding cab that lost control...

    Haha...yep, a quadracyclist with a gas-powered motor.
  • There was another big accident at this same intersection yesterday. Don't know the details and if anyone was hurt or not but a few cars got pretty smashed up.

Seems to be a dangerous corner.
