I always go for Chavella's tortilla soup. It's spicy, limey and delicious!
-
aguacate con queso torta at chavellas. best food ever.

I had this last night. I know in my mind (and stomach) a breast and leg should be plenty, but that mole is so good I almost want to cry when I realize my plate is empty. -
Is Oaxaca planning to put some stools next to the tables?
The food at Oaxaca is good. -
Got on the 4 train..it was a special baseball game train and made me get out and wait for 10 minutes for a regular 4. Got on the regular and there was a gaggle of late 20's mid 30's who were coming from the Pavement concert..one of the the half drunk tools started talking about his LA Mexican food knowledge. Chavella's and Oaxaca are not as good as lots of S.Cal Mexican places..pretty simple math 40% of the population is Mexican..if I would have had a sub standard described Chavella's burritto I would have jammed it down the asshole's windpipe if you don't like the place and you know of a better place in Williamsburg..for god sake go there or if you are really that put out ..hitch hike to LA and chomp on the "real shit"..Long live any decent Mexican place in PH/CH..I hope Pavement breaks up you warm stool of human. Don't sit on the train and rattle off every item on Chavella's menu that you eat monthly and describe it as shit...that makes you...full of shit

He's an idiot, catwalker. Even people in LA don't know real Mexican food. Chavella's is real Mexican food. Oaxaca is pretty close to California style Mexican that you find in LA. Chavella's doesn't even sell burritos and you won't find burritos in Mexico or at least I never found a single burrito on the dozens of trips I've taken to Mexico.

no stools yet.
The food at Oaxaca is good.
But the food was good tonight as well.
I wonder if they are going to attempt anything with that little outside courtyard? -
Had some of the carnitas tacos at Oaxaca the other day - not bad. I like the carnitas tacos at Chavella's more, but they're pretty different. I'll certainly go back to switch it up once in a while, but Chavella's is still my choice.
Oh, and I like that they have horchata - didn't try it, but will on the next go 'round. -
pretty good, we got some take out last night... i think i like chavella's better though, the flavors are stronger. the carnitas taco was pretty bland and the steak taco was only slightly better. the chicken tacos were good though, very tasty. the guacamole was very bland, just tasted like mashed up avocados. *shrug* i'll probably stick with chavella's.

and, according to Groupon, it is also closed:
I purchased their Groupon last weekend, but here is the email I got tonight:
Thank you for purchasing the Oaxaca Taqueria Groupon.
Unfortunately, the Prospect Heights location has closed. However, you may still redeem your Groupon at any of the other 3 locations. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
I checked further to be sure that by Prospect Heights they meant this location, and they did.
-
I blame Chavella's for killing Oaxaca.
....If I was Oaxaca, and Chavella's was about to open a new location close to me, I'd close too.

Damn, we're in restaurant heaven. There goes Crown Heights reputation for murder and mayhem. Can we somehow keep it from becoming Park Slope Light?Lol, you would love that.
PH/CH is definitely an awesome food neighborhood. Cheap too. Def miss it

I have eaten at all the Oaxaca locations and after a small learning curve I know what to add or omit from my order to get what I want. The main and very big difference between Chavella is they cook the food on site. The par cooking formula at Oaxaca is not my favorite. The word of mouth way they went about introducing the Crown Heights location was bound to take a long time to establish a following. They should have had 1 or 2 dollar beers with a meal purchase in order to fill the really cool little dining room they have. The windows and simplicity are a welcome change...Chavella's new locations has got some built-in charm w tin ceilings and as much iron and wood as could be used practically. The big difference is beer, liquor but primarily the kitchen..even if you don't like the recipe..it's made on site and to order at Chavella's. Bizarre should be the new name for Bristen's a part-time limited menu Chinese cafe with strange hours that remind me of and eastern bloc government office ..and then in order top be the jack of no trade they continue the brunch..with supplimental things..because nobody that not really stones or drunk eats dumpling for breakfast. What a waste of a cool little outdoor space that has summer afternoon beer written all over it
-
As catwalkertexasranger says, their kitchen is TINY, but this space is ready for a new tenant -- MEANING, the perfect venture would be a pay-by-the-pound salad bar! Someone! Please!
-
Sorry, it looks like it will be yet another taco spot.
Hopefully this one will have its act together more.
-
Even before opening their doors, they're off to a smashing start, giving the place a name that has derogatory connotations. Oh well, whitey probably wont mind.
-
It is a dumb name to pick, especially if you are going to depend on a nearby, former hospital complex that seems to house a lot of highly educated people who have access to the internet.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=guero
I think I would have named it something to do with the food being served, as opposed to something to do with those who might (or might not....) eat there.
-
It does have non-derogatory meaning, but I've never personally heard it used as such... none of my Mexican cohorts ever used it purely as a descriptive or as a term of endearment.
-
Mine either.
...you'd think the new owners would know that the term had several meanings, and choose one that has less baggage.
Is it too much to ask new proprietors to google a name in advance of choosing it?
....mind you, the name doesn't really offend me and I'll eat just about anywhere that has a good taco, I just question choosing a name that may offend others.
I also do not think it wise to compete with Chavellas.
-
the word is frequently used in mexico as a nonjudgmental descriptor -- any baggage comes in the context the user chooses to apply. gringo is the harsher, derogatory term, although even that has mostly lost its bite through overuse and co-option. given the non-hispanic names of the owners, i assume the restaurant name is a bit of self-deprecating humor, an up-front confession that this is white folks' take on mexican.
like whynot, i'll reserve judgment for the food.
-
smokin joe has it right, there are lots of other words that people use that said with a smile mean something completely different. To be even clearer the took an L out of the name of the new place.
Gueros is opening in the old Oaxaca space. They did a sweet remodel and added some sizable benches that may be a nice place to sit if you are waiting for food. The place looks done, I didn't ask what the delay was about. The new ownwers run the Dramshop and Angry Wades so they probably have lots of the kinks worked out.
I am wondering what the bldg dept problem was that Oaxaca had w the space.
-
Guero is a common northern-Mexican last name, idiots. Talk to the proprietor before you soapbox it.
-
Anyone know when this place is supposed to open?
I'm craving tacos because of this thread.
-
saw the doors open and asked the guy when he is opening. Tuesday is the grand opening.!!
Howdy, Stranger!
